Tetris father Alexey Pajitnov thinks his creation can adapt to fit a world where mental fitness will soon replace physical fitness.
Pajitov and Tetris Company co-founder Henk Rogers explained that Tetris sells more copies now than ever, thanks to mobile phones, and that the Western world will soon emulate the casual-game explosion of Korea.
"People ask me, 'Are you still alive? I think you are a legend,'" Pajitnov told Kotaku. "I expected [Tetris] to be a good game - not worse than anything else. I never expected this."
Henk Rogers added: "We are going to turn Tetris into the first real virtual sport. Sports like baseball and football were created at a time when our future was a lifetime of physical activities and physical fitness. But now that's not as important, it's more about mental fitness today.
"Tetris is a virtual sport that exercises the mind. That is the definition of a virtual sport," said Rogers.

Retromags is proud to release Videogaming Illustrated #1 for everyone to enjoy. Special thanks to member, s1500 for this release as it is one of the more rarer issues from the early years of gaming magazines. Enjoy!
A message from s1500 on Videogaming Illustrated:
QUOTE
These issues of Videogaming & Computergaming Illustrated in a basement full of magazines in a used bookstore, back in 1991. This magazine, in my opinion was the absolute best example of video game journalism, leaving no stone unturned. Arcade games, home games and computer games were given extensive coverage in the forms of reviews and news. It beautifully illustrated the world of what games like before the great crash of 1984. Little is known about the publishing company(Ion International) nor what the staff went onto afterward. Sadly, the magazine did not last long, ending its run in 1984, almost perfectly in sync with the decline of the classic pre-NES era. The in-depth journalism still seems unmatched by magazines dating up to even today.

Hi All,
Here we go again, my very good friend Buzz (see http://buzz.computer.free.fr/) has just finished his "Portable Irda Joy" box !
For those who haven't seen previous release, the goal is to connect your old DB9 joystick (compatible with Atari , Amiga, Amstrad etc ...) or a paddle device to your PSP FAT.
The Portable Irda Joy box uses the IRDA port of your PSP. You need two AA batteries, and after switching it on, you can then enjoy emulators such as PSP-Hugo, PSPCap32 or PSP2600 with your old school Joystick, wirelessy !
Buzz has written the driver and designed the PCB and program the PIC micro-controller, and i was in charge of emulator enhancements.
Here is a snapshot of the new Printed Circuit Board for v2.1 :
If you have any electronic skills and if you want to design your own, you may find all documentation, PCB layout and source code on Buzz's web site
(see http://buzz.computer.free.fr/ ).
Here is a demo of a modified version of PSP-Hugo using Amiga DB9 Joystick (big thanks to Nico) connected to the Portable Irda Joy box :

Shunting Puzzle by Philipp Klaus Krause is a game entered in the recently held PDRoms Coding Competition v4.01 ( http://pdroms.de/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=105 )
This is a simple shunting puzzle for the ColecoVision. It has two levels corresponding to the classic Inglenook and Timesaver shunting puzzles.
Move the joystick forward / backward to move the engine.
The first fire button activates and deactivates decoupling mode. In decoupling mode a blue decoupling cursor appears and marks the decoupling position. It can be moved along the train by moving the joystick left/right. The second fire button decouples (and leaves decoupling mode).
Switches can be operated using the numbers on the keypad. Current switch positions are signaled by the point indicators next to the switches.

The New Dimension web page has recently moved and they have quickly got a couple of C64 games developed in the meantime. The first one being a Special Edition release of their 2008 game, Nyaaaaah! 11. Snodge has to traverse across various deadly levels to rescue his friends from the evil ruler. The Special Edition is an extended version and the old SEUCK engine is replaced with the smoother SEUCK REDUX.

Gears Of Fate by Thor is a game entered in the recently held PDRoms Coding Competition v4.01 ( http://pdroms.de/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=105 )
The goal of "Gears Of Fate" is to reach the red square with the green ball. This is reached by rotating the board, while undo is possible while the board still rotates.
Colored tiles are removed when three of them are regrouped. Grey tiles can not be removed at all. Dark colored tiles are removed once all tiles of the same color have disappeared.
This entry works on REAL HARDWARE where you have better sound but vector animations are slower. If you run this in an emulator: Using 12Khz WAV makes some emulators go nuts. Seems to work fine with NEOPOP 0.71 on Windows; Sometimes slower, sometimes faster than real HW.

I’ve made this hack to be able to select any item in the game. You do so by pressing and holding select before you select your inventory. By doing this, you will access an alternate inventory. Everytime you repeat the process you will access the next page. If you want to keep the current page, do the same, but press and hold start. To have the desired item in the real inventory, just select it with the A button. Then enter the inventory normally and you will have that item.
Remember to enter your inventory normally before you equip the items, or you will get dummy items on the equip menu. The same goes if you want to sell an item. Another point to note is that you must have at least one empty slot on your inventory before you select an item on the alternate inventory, or the game will freeze. You can also use any item on the alternate inventory, for example medical herbs or any other usable item.
I’ve also hacked the game so you have max stats for all your characters, included the extras, all the extras have the Metal Babble equip set, you can walk through most things inside dungeons and towns, and you have max and infinite gold and casino coins.

The most identifiable new feature of New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the casually competitive multiplayer. Players are ostensibly competing for coins and score, but the gameplay is designed to encourage a fluid combination of cooperation and competition. The one game we had a chance to try at the IndieCade booth, Octopounce, features almost the exact same friendly-competition between jumping characters -- and it was released two months before anyone knew about Miyamoto's latest.
Octopounce, by game designer Anna Anthropy and artist Saelee Oh, allows up to four players to control a little pixel octopus in a hand-painted underwater backdrop. The goal is to jump up and catch as many fish as possible, and each player can bounce on the other characters to reach the fish. Inactive player avatars remain on the screen, sleeping, so they can be used as convenient platforms. There's no real score -- an octopus becomes more opaque as it eats fish, and commentary about the game's progress appears in a text crawl at the bottom of the screen.
Of course, NSMB Wii features divergent gameplay elements, like precision platforming and enemies, but in terms of the newest mechanic -- the multiplayer bouncing -- this game, designed for the Game Over/Continue? exhibit during GDC, anticipated that element before Nintendo revealed it. It sort of makes sense, then, that Octopounce is inspired by Super Mario War, a homebrew effort to make a multiplayer Mario experience -- but NSMB Wii resembles Octopounce more closely than it does Super Mario War

Retromags.com is proud to welcome an icon to the project. You may know him as the Game Doctor (most promintent in Video Games and Computer Entertainment for me, but the Doctor has been printed in many other magazines too, including a short run in Electronic Gaming Monthly and the 80's and 90's run of Electronic Games, a remake of sorts of the 80's Electronic Games, the magazine credited as starting this fine section of the gaming industry we enjoy here at Retromags. You may know him as Bill Kunkel from his various articles in many different magazines and also on the web having written quite a bit of material on games and the industry. Any way you know him, he has surely earned your respect and is now a member here with Retromags.

The original Knight Lore is considered by many as a true classic game, which was the first to use the revolutionary isometric perspective. Developed and released by Ultimate Play the Game on the Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, MSX, and the BBC in 1984, we now have an MSX2 remake courtesy of Retroworks. As with the original game, the remake sees you controlling Sabreman as he treks through the isometric world searching for ingredients to a magic potion. The game features extras and improvements on the original game including different palettes for day/night, in game map that shows locations visited, improved music, torch animation, and much more. The Game Card can be found at the Retroworks' website, where you will find the game ROM download, PDF manual, packaging designs, and a game map. Also check out the YouTube clip to see the game in action. Thanks to Metalbrain for bringing us the news.

Electronic Gaming Monthly founder Steve Harris has re-acquired the recently-cancelled US enthusiast magazine, and plans to re-launch it this year.
Harris - who sold the magazine rights to publisher Ziff-Davis in 1996 - has re-purchased "certain assets" that include trademarks and publishing rights, and has announced his intention to re-introduce the publication in the second half of 2009.
"The re-launch of Electronic Gaming Monthly represents a welcome opportunity to continue delivering quality content to gaming enthusiasts," said Harris. "I feel honoured to once again be associated with this respected magazine. The talented writers and designers who built upon EGM's original vision have left behind a publication that is uniquely positioned to be successful."
After two decades on the market, Electronic Gaming Monthly was shut down when UGO Entertainment purchased online enthusiast publication 1UP.com and its associated websites. EGM, the only print publication still produced by Ziff-Davis' videogame division, was not a part of that deal, and was immediately cancelled.
"We have exciting plans for the evolution of what will once again be a leading independent voice for the gaming community," Harris continued. "The twenty year success of the EGM brand has always been built upon a commitment to its readers who I believe will enthusiastically embrace the changes we are planning to introduce."
