Update:: I decided to hijack this post for a little update on the development status.
While still I have a couple of PSP projects in mind, lately my interests has shifted towards developing stuff for iPhone. As a result my first game, Cryptix, has hit the App store:
Further details are available @ http://deniska.dcemu.co.uk/cryptix/
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is my entry to the NEO Summer Coding Contest:
SUPER METHANE BROTHERS PSP v1.4.8
This is a PSP adoptation of Super Methane Brothers, a commercial Amiga platformer by Apache Software Ltd.
The port is based on V1.4.8 of a linux conversion of the game by Mark Page.
GAME PLAY
Puff and Blow each have a Methane Gas Gun which fires a cloud of immobilising gas.
If this comes into contact with a bad guy he will be absorbed into the gas and then float
around the screen for a limited time. Bad guys are harmless in this state. Puff and Blow
must suck the floating gas clouds into their guns and blast them out against a vertical
surface. Bad guys then turn into bonuses which can be collected. Be warned! - the gas
cloud dissolves with time after which baddies become active again and extremely annoyed.
FEATURES
- 1 or 2 player game
- More than 100 levels
- Numerous bosses
- Secret rooms
- Lots of powerups
- Cheats (to be revealed later)
INSTALLATION
This game requires "homebrew-friendly" custom psp firmware to run.
- copy SuperMethaneBros folder in to ms:/PSP/GAME or ms:/PSP/GAMEXXX (where XXX is your custom firmware version number)
- to activate an add-on or a cheat you need to drop the cheat file in to SuperMethaneBros folder.
(for example, to make the game run faster create and drop file, named "fast")
CONTROLS

[CIRCLE] start 2 player game
[ARROWS] chose player's name / navigate Puff
[ANALOG] navigate Puff
[L-TRIGGER] fire Puff's gun in 2 player game / confirm name selections

Welcome to this week's Movie/Music news roundup, containing new Japanese and Hong Kong Video and Music releases from this week listed at Play-Asia.com. Around 610 new items are covered in this week, including new J-Pop, Anime as well as Japanese, Hong Kong and Western movie releases and much more.
A hit anime feature film Innocence - Absolute Edition arrived as a Blu-Ray disc this week. Influenced by Sci-fi films like Matrix and directed by the highly acclaimed Oshii Mamoru (Ghost in the Shell), Innocence is nominated for 5 awards in the 57th Cannes Film Festival.
The plot takes place in 2032 in a world where people, cyborgs and computers are living together. In this world, people created androids as toys and companions, however, a series of crimes involving androids killing their owners happened and the question about the relationship between humans and computers is asked.
Innocence explores the topic of "why did humans create things which resemble themselves?" this film has more than action, but a deep plot. The plot line is executed in style with stunning images and high quality sounds and is bound to leave a deep impression in all the audience's mind.
Rock Musical Bleach is a musical/theatrical product that nobody is likely to forget. The hit anime/manga series is transferred to the theater complete with songs and stylized fights presented as dance. Watch the artistic presentation of your favourite manga and your beloved cast of characters in action.
Since dancing is mentioned, aside from stylized dances, most people would think of clubbing and discos. The music producer of Final Fantasy series combined forces with DJs from Tokyo, Europe and the US to rearrange his themes as a club remix. Now, besides from immersing in the game world created by the music, you can dance to it.
Another product that takes your breath away is Black Diamond [standard & limited editions] by the pop idol Hoshina Utau (vocal: Mizuki Nana) from Shugo Chara!
Instead of leaving her fans cheering and screaming for more, this song of hers mesmerizes all listeners and numb their thoughts in the anime. See if her charms work the same wonders in the real world.

Bazix is the Dutch company that was responsible for Woomb.net, which I've mentioned a few times. That was the place where you could legally download and play MSX games, many of which were translated into English for the first time. Bazix planned to release D4's one-chip MSX (which plays all MSX games in a tiny package) in the West, conforming with European laws. Unfortunately, Bazix has run into some troubles, and is no longer able to bring the system to the West, and is shutting down Woomb.net, besides. The Wikipedia article says the MSX Association has already found solutions to the distribution problem, but their official site is down, so it's kind of hard to tell what's going on now...more as it develops.

The new SEGA arcade "image character" has begun his SEGA arcade image character duties! Aren't you excited? I'm excited. (You should be excited.) To review, previous image characters include MEGUMI, Yuko Ogura (twice!) and Satomi Ishihara. The new SEGA arcade image character is Jpop boy band singer Haruma Miura (pictured), breaking the string of females before him. As SEGA's image character, his face will be plastered all over SEGA's domestic arcades, perhaps enticing more females to venture inside. Says Miura:
Being photographed while gaming is a first for me. Initially, I was nervous, but gradually I relaxed and forgot all about that and just enjoyed the game. This isn't just work, it's also play... I don't really know what's best for me to do, but personally, I want everyone to know how much I enjoy game centers so they can see the appeal — especially now [in this heat], game centers are refreshingly cool.
Seems like a nice enough kid, even if he's misguided in his choice of coats. Hit the jump for another shot of Miura.

Here's a bit of actual arcade news that didn't get reported much. Global VR is making a proper Justice League arcade game. The bulk of the information can be found in the release, repeated here: "Development of this action-packed game is well underway. GLOBAL VR has taken elements from the most popular adventure and Global VRfighting games and combined them to offer players a totally unique and compelling arcade experience. Players will be able to play in single or multi-player modes as they command their heroes through a maze of villains such as Joker, Doomsday, and Darkseid, that are found on the different game levels."
Global VR is known these days for releasing arcade versions of console games, like Need for Speed Carbon, Blazing Angels, America's Army, and Paradise Lost, which takes the graphics from Far Cry Instincts and turns it into a rails shooter. It'll be interesting to see an actual new American-developed arcade game that's actually in the classic action vein.

To many of us, our gadgets are like our babies: we bring them everywhere, they're expensive, and we would go to great lengths to protect them. But just like babies, sometimes gadgets get dropped. The results are often tragic, and the guilt crippling. Maybe you haven't drenched your new $1600 keyboard in coffee, but have you accidentally plunked your BlackBerry in a urinal? Put your iPod through the wash? Has your adorable puppy destroyed your new laptop in a territorial gesture? What's your worst, your most embarrassing, your most expensive or just your most ridiculous "oh, shit" gadget moment?

The opening and ending theme to the series No x Limit has arrived as standard and CD+DVD limited versions. The songs are upbeat and energetic, complimenting the feel of the anime.
After introducing anime music, let's move on to the game soundtracks. Subarashiki Kono Sekai / The World Ends With You have released another soundtrack. This compilation is released by for fans as the songs contained in this CD are selected according to the favorite music polls on Square Enix's website.
Namie Amuro has also published her newest album Best Fiction [standard & CD+DVD standard edition]. The CD itself shows prove of how the hit singer is still an established chart topper and trendsetting throughout a decade of hardship in her personal and professional life.
The limited version of Best Fiction comes with a DVD with music video clips of the seventeen songs Namie Amuro did on the CD, through this DVD, you will understand that not only is she a good singer, but a good dancer as well.

http://www.gearlog.com/2008/07/sega_...ream_hamst.php
I should've seen this coming. After robotic pet dogs and cats, Sega Toys now comes out with a robo-hamster. What's next for the folks over at Sega Toys; robo-plants? Oh wait, they've already done that. Named the "Dream Hamster," the product would be released on August 8, 2008 for approximately $12 per furry bot. Just press the switch on its abdomen and hold the Dream Hamster on your hand for it to start moving.
There are three different types available for purchase: the Golden hamster, Roborovski hamster, and the Jangarian hamster which is especially famous in Japan. Sega Toys is targeting women 20 to 40 years of age and expects to sell 100,000 Dream Hamster units per year. While I'm squirming with glee over their cuteness, I can't help but feel a bit sad for the robo-hamsters' real-life counterparts.

Most of us have probably dabbled around with a Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator before, but have you ever crammed one into a TARDIS? Those things are supposed to be bigger on the inside than the outside. Anyhow, one man decided that having a dedicated stand-up gaming cabinet wasn't enough, so he built this pillar of geek awesomeness.
Check out the two different sections, one on the building of the iconic blue Police Box, and the other on the console. He even had the 7th doctor, Sylvester McCoy, autograph the thing. Is it still a sin to covet thy neighbor's sci-fi gaming cabinet? If so, mark us down in the "sinner" category.

In our last video featuring Sega of America's Simon Jeffery, the president of the company explains why we haven't seen any System 16 or System 24 games on Xbox Live Arcade or the PlayStation Network. He also talks about his reluctance to put some of those games on Live due to Microsoft's requirement to update a game's graphics before porting.

Okay, so we're trying not to judge this book by its cover, but Taijia's PSP-860S just reeks of chintzy. The handheld gaming PMP not only plays back the elusive MP4 file format, but it also snaps presumably lackluster still shots with its 2-megapixel camera. You'll also find 1GB / 2GB of built-in RAM, a USB port, AV in / out, miniSD expansion slot and some form of emulation application. If you're not dozing by now, you may actually care that it'll only run you 399 yuan ($59) / 499 yuan ($73).

Welcome to this week's Movie/Music news roundup, containing new Japanese and Hong Kong Video and Music releases from this week listed at Play-Asia.com. Around 900 new items are covered in this week, including new J-Pop, Anime as well as Japanese, Hong Kong and Western movie releases and much more.
The original soundtrack of the hit RPG Persona 4 is out, this is a compilation of high quality vocals and instrumentals that represent contemporary Japan and the eerily glamourous Persona 4 atmosphere. So be ready to bring a piece this dazzling nightmare home.
The Naruto series continues to run strong, and fans are in for a treat this summer, not only is the feature length movie Naruto Shippuden - Kizuna going to be aired in august, a set of a new theme song compilations and character song CDs are released this week.
No matter whether you are residing in Japan or not, you can still participate in the Naruto Shippuden - Kizuna fun. Naruto All Stars collection, the character song CD is released as part of the campaign. Feel closer to your favourite characters by listening to them sing and discover their hidden music talents.
Aside from the character song collection, two more theme song compilations are released as part of the campaign. Naruto Super Hits 2006-2008 and Naruto Best Hit Collection 2 carries opening and ending songs from the animation series.
Naruto Super Hits 2006-2008 is bundled with a DVD that shows the credit-less versions of opening and ending animations while Naruto Best Hit Collection 2 carries the theme songs from the first two feature length movies.
While theme songs compliment the atmosphere of a film or series as a whole, image songs are written for a particular scene or character. Your Seed [standard & limited editions] is an image song for Disney's summer blockbuster Kung Fu Panda.
With this dance number, the boy band Hey! Say! Jump! renewed their youthful image. Although still energetic, they brought in a level of maturity and style, establishing their standing in the Japanese music industry.
Enjoy the both the image song and the blockbuster action. Please notice that the Panda is not the only one who does Kung fu, action star Donnie Yan is bringing his thrilling drama An Empress And The Warriors to Blu-ray discs as well. Another interesting Hong Kong film is Mad Detective that features a cop who walks the line between sanity and insanity.
Lastly, visit Gotham city in search for the traces of the dark knight. Go back to the start of the legend with Batman Begins, as a limited edition, this Blu-ray disc comes with special booklets, comics, postcards and a bust of your favorite character.
