Console modder Sam Thornley actually built this Pac-Man Mini handheld way back in 2007, but he only recently shared it with the members of Ben Heck's forums, and we're sure glad he did. There's nothing too special at the heart of this one, just a Jakks Pacific Namco Arcade Classic system, but Sam hit all the right marks with the little details, from the red buttons that are just itching to be pressed to the old school flip switch to the bigger-than-it-has-to-be casing. If you think you're up to the task of building your own, you can find all the details you need an plenty of pics to guide you on your way by hitting up the read link below.

The guy who wrote the scanlines demystified article we mentioned way back has a new article up, investigating deinterlacing solutions for old consoles on new TVs. This was particularly of interest to me, as my PC Engine looks absolutely terrible on my LCD television, with artifacts galore. You can view his article here. He doesn't come up with the definitive answer, but he does evaluate a whole lot of upscan converters for you, so it goes a way toward helping in research. For what it's worth, I've been told the best solution is simply to get an HD CRT television, but that doesn't help get the maximal signal, even still.

A fellow who calls himself Uze has created a new 8-bit open-source console called the Uzebox. It's a hobby console, composed of easy to find components, but with some neat elements to it, like direct midi-in for sound composition, and the ability to program in C, rather than assembler, which many of these hobby consoles use (not making a value judgment here, it's just different is all). The system can display 256 colors, 240x224 resolution, overclocked speed of 28.61818Mhz, and has a robust 4k of ram. Input is classic NES controllers, and the sound is a bit NES-like as well.
The main benefits of the system are best explained by the creator, via a youtube comment: "There's no external memory, everything (code, kernelm, gfx, music) is in a single hex file flashed on the main chip. And thats the goal, only one thing to compile and flash. Since the kernel is arranged as a library, its easy to just include it in the compilation along your game." Check out a video of a game (Tetris clone) running here. Then a demo of the midi capabilities here. Seems like a really neat project for those with the skills to use it! Also check out the nifty looking case idea he has for it. Thanks to Jeff for the link!

Not only can the ‘Media Street eMotion‘ play your favorite MP3’s and MP4’s but it’s also compatible with game ROMs and plays NES, GameBoy, GameBoy Color and Sega Genesis games. Instead of using a batteries, you use the Sun. That’s right, this bad boy has Solar Panels to charge the portable device.
The system also has a respectable resolution of 320X240 color LCD screen. The unit itself is small, measuring only 5.5 X 3 X 1 inches and can hold a maximum 2GB SD card. An cool extra feature included is the ability to charge mobile phones, digital cameras, laptops, and many other Lithium portable devices with the Solar Panels.
You can order right now the Media Street EM-SAL2GIG at Amazon for $169.99.

Today's generations of gee-whiz graphics and analog controls have brought with them one unfortunate addition: beefy, expensive wireless controllers that we're loathe to dash against the floor or to bash against an adjacent sibling. The creatively-termed "USB Metal Game Pad" from Dream Cheeky is just what it says on the box, doing your basic assortment of SNES-era joypad work with some USB pluggability and Mac / PC compatibility, but being conveniently built out of metal. Sure, it looks shoddy and uninspired, but we wouldn't have it any other way. No word on price or where to nab one.

Over at my genetically superior forums, PC Games That Weren't webmaster Timo Weirich has been posting footage of real game code running on what must be real Panasonic M2 hardware! This stuff is a real treat, as game footage from the system -- despite its media popularity and close-to-launch-ness -- is incredibly rare. Here is what he's posted so far:
D2:
video #1
video #2
IMSA Racing: (dig that music!)
video #1
video #2
Iron & Blood:
M2 port
Original PlayStation version (for comparison)
While I'm on an M2 kick, here's a brief collection of videos from Konami arcade games that ran on M2 hardware, to give you a better taste of what the games might have looked like if the console came out:
Polystars
Battle Tryst
Evil Knight
Heat of Eleven '98
There are also some various other M2-related videos on Youtube, but let's just keep this limited to real game code running on the hardware. Stuff worth noting: D2 was completely reworked for the Dreamcast and is a different game, Iron & Blood was not a planned game as much as a tech demo, and the announcer from Heat of Eleven '98 needs to narrate every game ever.

Hi All,
Here is a new version of PSPWrite the text editor for PSP.
It permits to edit even huge text file, in both dos and unix mode, using iso8859-1 (8bits) characters encoding. All iso8859-1 characters are present in the "Danzeff like" virtual keyboard.
The IR keyboard support is based on the work of Harald Fielker.
It has been developed on linux for Firmware 1.5 and 3.x-m33 and 4.x-m33, and for the IR keyboard
part it has been tested using a Targus Universal IR Wireless keyboard on PSP FAT.
What's new then in 1.1.1 ?
- Bug fix in wrap mode for text using specific iso-8859-1 characters
(Thanks to ShadowMaker for reporting this nauty bug)
- New built in fonts with various size (8x10, 8x14, 8x16 and 16x22)
How to use it ? Everything is in the README.txt file.
Sources are included, and this package is under the GNU public license,
read COPYING.txt file for more information about it.
Everything is there : http://zx81.zx81.free.fr/
Enjoy,
Zx.

Welcome to this week's Movie/Music news roundup, containing new Japanese and Hong Kong Video and Music releases from this week listed at Play-Asia.com. Around 250 new items are covered in this week, including new J-Pop, Anime as well as Japanese, Hong Kong and Western movie releases and much more.
Johnny's boys never stop, right after News released the DVD recordings of their winter concert, Arashi published their new single Truth/ Kaze no Mukou E. Completely opposed to their last single One Love, Truth is a fast tempo dance number that instills a feel of nervous excitement into its listeners.
While Truth features a darker atmosphere, its accompanying piece Kaze no mukou e is relaxed, styled like a folk song which tempts listeners to sing along. Truth/ Kaze no Mukou e is released in two Limited Versions [type one (already sold out) and type two] and a Standard Edition.
Right after the release of Tales of Vesperia, the "Tales of" debut on the Xbox360™, its OST came out. Like all game music, different pieces are used to depict different scenes or places, and following the "Tales of" convention, although there are melancholy pieces, the sense of hope never fails to make their appearance.
Like the idol groups of Johnny Entertainment's, Macross Frontier formed their own group out of Sheryl Nome and Ranka Lee. As an established artist Sheryl Nome has a very strong and refined singing voice that brings out the essence of Yoko Kanno's melodies while the younger and less experienced Ranka Lee gives the song a refreshing feel.
The new opening of Macross Frontier, Lion is a song about love and the strength to survive the continual struggle between planets.
Here's a summary of all new releases that were published between Saturday, August 16th and Friday, August 22nd. If some specific item that you are looking for is missing, please don't hesitate to contact our customer service with your request.

Black Ice, White Noise was an ambitious 3D adventure game for the Jaguar CD that was canceled by publisher Atari right around its Alpha phase. It is an interesting historical footnote for two reasons, the first being that this dark and seedy (and extremely expensive) cyberpunk thing was an internal response to Sam Tramiel mandating a new mascot for the Atari brand (the lady in the red jacket, I guess?), and second because it is a third person 3D game where the main character explores a large 3D city by either walking or stealing cars, designed several years before that one game came out that all the other games copied for a while.
The game itself is old news for readers of this site, but today I learned via gameSniped that copies of Alpha builds of the game are for sale at unreasonably high prices! You can pay $1,500 on eBay, if you'd like, or you can buy direct from the licensed distributor. There are two separate builds of the game - both are in Alpha, and while one is more feature-complete, the earlier one crashes less often. For some reason both builds are $30 each, and you can't get a deal on a bundle, so I guess you can either spend $60 to get all you can out of the experience or choose what's more important to you, less crashes or features like "the infamous 'Zebra Hooker.'" You can also get the soundtrack for $20, which was written by the guy who wrote Herp Albert's Rise and, if his disgrace-to-god website is to be believed, Notorious B.I.G.'s Hypnotize. He did some other game music too - the video game discography is kind of hidden on his site, but you can see it here. Before you get excited, no, he didn't do the soundtrack to The Adventures of Batman and Robin on the Genesis, he composed the music for the beautifully animated cutscenes in the Sega CD version that sounded nothing at all like the music from the show.

Over at Gamasutra, Steve Fulton has published a massive 23,000-word history of Atari from 1978 to 1981, encompassing '... some of the most exciting developments the company ever saw in its history: the rise of the 2600, the development of some of the company's most enduringly popular games (Centipede, Asteroids) and the development and release of its first home computing platforms.' Best quote in there for Slashdot readers, perhaps: 'Atari had contracted with a young programmer named Bill Gates to modify a BASIC compiler that he had for another system to be used on the 800. After that project stalled for over a year Al was called upon to replace him with another developer. So ... Al is the only person I know ever to have fired Bill Gates

Last week, the Brazilian Sega licensee released another iteration of the 8-bit platform they insist in keeping alive. It's called the Master System 3 (not to be confused with the classic Master System III). The new console has a "modern" design remarkably similar to the 1990's Mega Drive, and comes with 131 built-in, G-rated games. Opinions on the local blogs have been a bit harsh, criticizing the lack of a cartridge slot and steep price tag (about 133USD, or half a Playstation 2 in the gray market).
The Master System III comes with a pair of Mega Drive-ish six-button controllers -- I'm not sure what for: as far as I know the only SGM game to use more than two buttons was Tectoy's own Street Fighter II port, which is not included in the list (probably due to licensing issues). Somewhat amusingly, SGM3 also features composite video output --- old hardware dressed for a new world.

via Kotaku:
Let's file this one under "Too Soon." Seen at the "Invaders!" booth, tucked away in Hall Four of the Games Convention being held in Leipzig, Germany right now, was this non-interactive installation of the classic Taito space faring aliens laying waste to the Twin Towers. It was projected on a massive screen in the vicinity of lots of classic Space Invaders goods, as the game is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. It was... it was weird.
This hits three year's after the first and last game to take on the World Trade Center hit Brooklyn.
Honestly, we're not quite sure what's going on here quite yet, as we didn't know the German translation for "What the ****?" We do know, however, that the 8-bit tower jumpers and the negative score applied to each WTC tower to indicate damage aren't going to sit well with, we're thinking, everyone.
