News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...galaxy-remake/
The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, eh? What a great TV show and what a fine adventure game. That was then, this is now. The original game, which was released by Infocom in 1984, was a text adventure, but the remake uses a point and click interface. The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy remake was developed by the development team at H2G2, which consists of
James Spanos (Art, Music, Programming), Kevin Haddley (Story), Chris Jones (AGS Engine) and many contributors and testers. The game is available to download from the H2G2 website with an optional donation.

While the rest of the industry has been babbling on about the iPad and imitations thereof, Qi Hardware is actually shipping a product that is completely open source and copyleft. Linux News reviews the Ben NanoNote (product page), a handheld computer apparently containing no proprietary technology. It uses a 366 MHz MIPS processor, 32MB RAM, 2 GB flash, a 320x240-pixel color display, and a Qwerty keyboard. No network is built in, though it is said to accept SD-card Wi-Fi or USB Ethernet adapters. Included is a very simple Linux OS based on the OpenWrt distro installed in Linksys routers, with Busybox GUI. It's apparently intended primarily for hardware and software hackers, not as a general-audience handheld. The price is right, though: $99.

News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...re-publishing/
To celebrate Future Publishing’s 25th anniversary, Out-of-Print Archive traces the birth and rise of one of the world’s most famous and successful magazine publishing companies. Future Publishing will always have a place in my heart, mainly due to my first ever computing magazine being Amstrad Action and one of my all time favourite magazines, MEGA, both being published by Future. Some time ago, I managed to track down many of the early Future Publishing staff (including founder Chris Anderson and former Editor/Publisher/Group Publisher Steve Carey) and got some great history of the company, some of which you can read in the article. The web hosts many fine articles and interviews, but there’s nothing quite like reading a well written glossy magazine from Future. Support publishers like Future and ensure that these types of magazines are around for another 25 years.

Joojoo hacks are starting to trickle in as non-fanboys get their hands on the iPad alternative. The custom OS forum for the device tells the tale of successful installs of Windows 7, OSX, Android, and Jolicloud.
So far the only one to have a how-to is Windows 7, but we’re sure that will change quickly. When Microsoft’s offering is installed on the device it get about four hours of use per charge which is fairly decent. We’d love to get our hands on one and try it out with Android but the $499 price tag is still a hurdle for us. We’re not saying it’s over priced, as it comes with a lot under the hood. Even at that price we think it blows the aPad out of the water.

Hi all,
X48 is an unix emulator (under X Window) of the famous HP48 GX calculator.
It has been written many years ago by Eddie C. Dost in C langage.
I've sucessfully modified and port the source code of the 0.4.0 version using Pandora environment. It's now working fine on Pandora, using a new layout to fit pandora screen width.
The package is under GPL Copyright and sources are included.

[Graham] designed this PIC based Tetris game on a single board. The hardware is quite nice but we enjoyed his explanation of the graphics algorithm that he used. Having coded Tetris from the ground up ourselves we understand how difficult it is to explain how the program works. Tracking pieces already on the board as well as moving pieces, making sure that rotation won’t cause a collision with another piece or go out-of-bounds, and looking for completed lines all add up to one bid headache.
[Graham's] method for handling rotation involves choosing a point around which to rotate, measuring how this affects each pixel in the piece, and then checking those pixels for overlaps. It may take a couple of readings, but he’s done a brilliant job of making it understandable. There’s a demo after the break and the link at the top takes you to his treatise on Tetris.

These aren’t terrorists, they’re electrical engineering students. For their final project they developed a headband and rifle input system for the NES. The controllers send data to a laptop which then maps out the inputs to NES controller commands and sends them to an original NES console, no emulation here.
The controllers in the headband and rifle are Firefly sensor network nodes. Originally, [Kevin] and [Evan] tried using accelerometers for motion information but found the data do be unreliable. After an upgrade to gyroscope modules the interface is much more responsive, as seen about 3:50 into the video after the break. We like seeing motion controller hacks and we appreciate the choice of a classic system (and lesser known game title). This really makes it a whole different game.

The Atari 2600 pause circuit is now available in a kit form. We saw this pause method back in February and the kit uses the same circuit. We don’t really need a kit for this, the board is very simple to throw together. But we do appreciate the detailed installation instructions (PDF) that accompany it. After all, you don’t want to kill you classic gaming rig with a botched install.

With World Cup fever spreading absolutely everywhere -- not even Gandalf is immune, it seems -- it's not surprising that it has bled into the world of video games. And no, we're not talking about the actual World Cup video game. We're talking, of course, about the vuvuzela, the bane of ears worldwide. If you thought the rocket launcher, or even the mighty BFG, were the best weapons in Doom 2, think again. They don't hold a candle to the mighty vuvuzela.
Okay, so it's probably just a re-skinned chaingun, but it's pretty funny. Check it out after the break. Just be sure to turn the volume down first.

Hi All,
fMSX is a famous emulator of the MSX, MSX2, and MSX2+ 8bit home computers.
It runs MSX/MSX2/MSX2+ software on many different platforms including Windows and Unix.
See http://fms.komkon.org/fMSX/ for further informations.
It has been first written by Marat Fayzullin, and later Vincent van Dam ported it on SDL.
Here is a port on Pandora of the version i've previously ported to GP2X-Wiz and other portable consoles.
How to use it ? Everything is in the README.txt file.
It's distributed under Marat Fayzullin's license for the original MSX part, and under GNU license for all the Pandora part.
Here is a full working binary version :

This portable Atari is the result of [Mario's] toils. The core system is an Atari Flashback 2, an embedded system released in 2005 with several built-in games. The stock titles weren’t enough so [Mario] added a cartridge slot in order to play whichever games he wishes. The case was originally the packaging for an iPod touch so you know it’s sturdy. We also like the free-formed audio amplifier as seen in the work log. Does anyone know if the Flashback 2 has a pause feature?

Here's a logistical dilemma for the ages: What's the best way to incorporate multiplayer into the fast-paced puzzle action of Tetris? It's a question that's been answered in plenty of the game's incarnations -- but series creator Alexey Pajitnov seems to think that there's still a better way yet to be offered. In a recent interview with Gamasutra, he revealed that he's been tinkering with multiplayer versions of Tetris for "more than 10 years."
Pajitnov explained that, due to the game's frantic speed, players "have no brain resources to observe what the other people are doing." His ideal multiplayer solution would be one in which players "could really see what the other people do and take their gameplay and their achievement and their status in the game really [into] account."
We'll solve your decade-long predicament right now, Mr. Pajitnov: Bullet time. Yeah, you just sit and think about that one for a while.

Another plug for a fabulous article presented by this very author: ‘Back in Time’: June 1990. ‘Back in Time’ is a monthly feature where we look back at the classic video gaming magazines twenty years ago this month. This month we look at the most popular magazines when Operation Wolf shot onto the Sega Master System with an excellent conversion of the hit coin-op, Sinclair User reached its 100th issue, magazines went football crazy to coincide with the FIFA World Cup in Italy and Zzap!64 Amiga published the first edition in an ongoing development diary of a Rowland brothers C64 game called Creatures…

Produced by Tom & Jerry, COlor Lines is a puzzle game inspired by the PC game Lines where you have match up lines (horizontal, vertical or diagonally) of five similar colour blocks across the grid, making them disapear and gaining points.
