Fan of benheck? Fan of emulation, homebrew? Fan of the Atari 800?
Then we have a treat for you!
Benheck, purveyor of all things hackable has decided to post a few things from his past in the form of a dump of his programs he did for his atari 800.
When I was young I used to do a lot of BASIC programming on my Atari 800 computer. Many years later I got an SIO2PC cable from eBay, which allows you to use your PC as a virtual disk drive with an old Atari. This allows a person to make disk images of their old stuff. Knowing how fragile the old FM disks were, I was excited to make backups.
Sadly, about 3 minutes after getting the transfer cable my 810 drive conked out. However recently a customer found me a working 1050 drive at a thrift store (how come thrift stores in Wisconsin aren’t that cool?) so once again I can share these old games with the world!
If you ever wondered what the “amazing” Ben Heck was doing at age 11, now you can find out! Though a programmed a lot of stuff, I’m only including what is complete or fairly playable.
Should run on most modern emulators, or a real Atari if you have an SIO2PC cable. Enjoy!
What you waiting for go get it!

Poor Zipit. As a $149.99 instant messenger client nobody got particularly excited about you. Even now, as a $38 IM client you aren't exactly in high demand -- but as a $38 portable Linux machine, well, that's another story altogether. The machines have been tweaked before, but the latest and greatest is this hack from Hunter Davis, who can turn a virgin Zipit Z2 into a full-featured Linux machine in under five minutes, as shown in the video below. To do the same all you need is Hunter's hacked firmware and a microSD card to throw it onto. Once completely tweaked you'll get full mouse support, WiFi connectivity, and even audio output so that you can rock some tunes on the go -- though the command-line interface won't make it the most compelling PMP ever. With only a 300MHz processor and 32MB of RAM we wouldn't go compiling our COMP-SCI 101 homework on here, but this little firmware refresh certainly makes for a tastier experience than before.

This is a small (big) fix for a small (big) bug which caused random battles to stop completely just before fighting the last boss in world 3. I´m looking for a code to manually re-enable them, but in the meantime a patch which fixes the bug is up.
The nutjobs who programmed this crap need to be beaten with a tire iron. For those who are interested, the bug was caused by an extremely unlikely combination of factors, including (1) the location of one particular string in the rom, and (2) the particular method by which the string was accessed. The simple probability of any string starting at this address is one in 65535…

byuu has just released a new SNES debugger based on his bsnes emulator.
It’s pretty awesome, and a thousand times better than Geiger’s Snes9x Debugger. It has a lot of fancy things, including a VRAM viewer! If you’re not excited, there’s something severely wrong with you.
Questions, comments, complaints, and feature requests may be posted at byuu’s message board.

The amount of detail [Doug] put into his Dr. Frankenstein MAME cabinet is outrageous! Usually we’re more interested in the guts, but in this case the real story is the cabinet itself. Painted to resemble weathered metal, the effect of dripping water is visible on every rivet. There are illuminated portals on either side: one shows the monster, the other shows the bride and the good doctor. Sprinkled throughout the case are analog dials, lamps, and other laboratory bits. [Doug] tops off the design by concealing the power switch inside a book of Frankenstein’s lab notes which is tucked away behind the door beneath the controls. A lovely build for a creepy house.

Retro Fusion was a printed multimedia retro magazine that not only featured a healthy dose of retrogaming but also included articles on retro films and retro TV. Issue zero was launched back in December 2005, with issues 1 and 2 being released throughout Gamstation stores across the UK in 2006. However, the publication was cruelly cut short and hasn't been seen or heard of since, until now. Issue 3 is now in the works with plans for a Christmas 09 release. The Retro Fusion website is now up and running, so why not drop by, browse through issues 1 and 2 online, pop into the forum and keep up to date with what's happening?

Not sure how many of you remember me from when I was a bit more active in the scene, but those that do remember me, should also remember that about the same time NightWolve started his project on XakIII, I also started one for Startling Odyssey 2. This project has been on going since I think either 2001, or 2002, something like that, and it has been an on and off project for me. Thanks to NightWolve for showing this was possible!
I kind of dropped off the planet for awhile due mainly to issues in the real world… Anyways, I just wanted to let everyone know that the project is still alive and progressing rather well… with all things considered…
First off though, this is not a 100% word for word translation, as throughout the years, my translators have all fell through… so the the translation has gone through 3 machine translators and about 5 web page translators, and with the combined turnout of those translations, we get this fan translation… a rough, not exact to the script… playable version… in English…
Also, some of the translated text had to be summarized because it was longer than the allowed text, and I am not up to trying to figure out how to compress the text or add it to different parts of the disc…
So if you don’t mind some changed names/items/spells/text, I hope very soon that you will enjoy this game as well, at least until someone that can translate better than the machine translators can do…
Anyways, the project is about 85-90% completely translated… there are just a few more things I need to get done… after all, there are over 80 different areas/towns/dungeons/caves/etc to go through…
I have played through the game on a real system, and so far, everything looks very good… all things considered…
I have talked with Dave, and we might be able to make the font look better, but it might be more than I can handle…
Once I play a bit more with the emulator, I will post screenies from further in the game…
*update* EsperKnight has offered to help me with the Font Routine hack to allow more characters per line and a better looking font.
Visit http://forums.magicengine.com/en/viewtopic.php?t=2312 for screenshots and updates to the project.

Snara is a solution to the eternal problem of idiot proof distribution of IPS patches.
By taking care of any problems for you user, you can easily and safely distribute patches wrapped into Snara. Snara is an Adobe Air application making it universal, so anywhere you can run Air your users can patch. You can also incorporate a read me file, screenshots or other media.
It’s built using Adobe Flex, so anyone with Flex can build it. You can also make it multilingual. I made an example using Hamelin no Violin Hiki English patch by J2E.

Aeon Genesis has released their own translation of Mystic Ark. The script was translated by Ian Kelley, and most of the hacking was done by Gideon Zhi. The project is several years old and took a lot of effort, so savor it! Take your time going through the game.
As a side note, this *will* work on your SNES.

We don't know exactly how to say this without overloading your nerd subsystem, but this R2D2 unit packs eight consoles, an integrated sound system and a projector for throwing your Jet Grind Radio sessions onto a wall. The only extras you'll need are the masses of controllers you see above and the steady constitution to not erupt into geek euphoria. Popular Science reader Brian De Vitis is the man you have to thank for this splicing of console goodness, and he's been kind enough to also provide a picture of the R2's mobo-laden innards. It awaits just past the break.
