fMSX is a famous emulator of the MSX, MSX2, and MSX2+ 8bit home computers.
It runs MSX/MSX2/MSX2+ software on many different platforms including Windows and Unix.

There's plenty of folks that will sell you a so-called "consolized" Neo Geo MVS arcade system, but you won't find many quite as impressive as this bit of kit from Analogue Interactive. Crafted from 100 percent real walnut, the console boasts a seamless design without any visible screws or nails, all the audio / video outputs you could want (for a Neo Geo, that is), and even some working dust flaps. Of course, it does come at a bit of a premium price -- but $649 is actually the exact same price that SNK's original Neo Geo AES home console sold for back in the day, and it was only made out of plastic. Check out the gallery below for a closer look, and hit up the source link below to get your order in if you like what you see -- the first units are expected to ship early next month.

[source: retro.nintendolife.com via gbatemp.net] How to get that authentic retro look from your modern flatscreen TV. Sometimes, outdated technology has a quality which seemingly defies description. For example, those of you that are old enough may harbour a strange nostalgic affection for the monochrome Game Boy’s blurry LCD screen, even to the point of spurning the updated Game Boy Color because its improved display doesn’t exhibit the same flaws that gave the original handheld its unique personality. It’s an odd situation, but one that many of you will no doubt sympathise with. Veteran gamers will feel a similar glow of fondness when the word scanlines is mentioned. Again, this is a case of outdated technology boasting an appeal which simply cannot be replicated by modern devices; for the uninitiated, scanlines are a characteristic of old CRT monitors - the kind that were standard issue before flatscreen LCD and plasma TVs arrived on the scene.

News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...n-zx-spectrum/
Released just a few days ago on the ZX Spectrum 128k and ZX Spectrum 3+ platforms was Cray 5. Developed by the Spanish coders Retroworks, Cray 5 is based on the 1987 classic Amstrad CPC game by Topo Soft. The game places you in the 22nd century where, during a humanitarian mission, your spaceship is hit by an asteroid and it’s your objective to prevent the ship from self destructing. Sounds easy enough if it weren’t for malfunctioning maintenance droids, electromagnetic generators and self-defence barricades. And if all that wasn’t bad enough, the radioactivity throughout the ship means that the lifespan of your protective jet-pac suit is limited, meaning you have to recharge it at appropriate places. Both the 128k and 3+ versions can be downloaded for free along with the cover art, front cover, back cover and full source code pack.

The second entry into the Sideways Seuck Compo 2011 is Missile Madness from legendary SEUCK coder Alf Yngve. It’s a time of war, nuclear war, and it’s your task as the Air Force Captain to manage the country’s missile defences. This means guiding the surface-to-air missiles to destroy any incoming warheads. Just make sure you aim carefully as each enemy missile that hits the ground results in lethal radiation spreading through your base. The game and instructions can be found at the Sideways Seuck Compo 2011 webpage.

Flawshow is the first entry into the Commodore 64 Sideways Seuck Compo 2011. Although Flawshow is based on the, erm, revealing kind of games like Lady Killer, this Anthony Burns production does not feature any of those game’s full on rewards. The game’s plot follows the exploits of an unfortunate programming genius who unwittingly had a swarm of sentient computer viruses invade his computer. To save his computer and the world wide spread of the viruses, the programmer has created two anti-virus programs which can eliminate the viruses once and for all. The game and instructions can be found at the Sideways Seuck Compo 2011 webpage.

[Gregory] wrote in to share his most recent project, an FPGA clone of the PC Engine/Turbografx 16 console. You may remember him from last year, when we talked about his SEGA Genesis FPGA clone. He just couldn’t leave well enough alone, and decided to resurrect yet another 16-bit machine in FPGA form.
He has been working on the project for about three months now, but he has been making very quick work of getting everything up and running. As of a few weeks ago, the project was in a pretty unstable alpha stage, but after pounding away at some bugs, he is now able to render any game he pleases.
The clone uses an Altera DE1 board just like his previous builds, and he has been able to emulate all three if the main chips that make up the Turbografx logic board. He has yet to work on the Programmable Sound Generator, but that is slated for the near future. While the FPGA currently stores ROMS in its flash memory, he has plans to add the ability to load games from an SD card.
Keep reading to see a pair of videos showing his console clone in action, it’s impressive.

Just in case you were worried, it looks like Razer's Switchblade ultra-portable PC "concept" is totally, really real -- in China at the very least. Razer, Intel and Tencent have announced "a strategic partnership aimed at expanding the entertainment possibilities for Chinese gamers" based around the Switchblade. Several of Tencent's titles, including League of Legends andDungeon Fighter Online, will be optimized for the Switchblade and its magical keyboard.
There's still no release date for device, with the three companies only promising that there will be updates in "the months to come." That's probably for the best, as we're fairly certain that the ability to play League of Legends at any time will bring civilization to a screeching halt.

A new super-sized twist on the Pac-Man franchise has just hit the web.
As detailed on Gamasutra, The World's Biggest Pac-Man is a new, free-to-play browser version of the game with a focus on user-created levels.
Developed by Australian web specialist Soap Creative in tandem with Namco Bandai and Microsoft, it allows users to make their own levels via a Facebook application.
The individual levels are then jigsawed together into one enormous maze with screen exits offering access to new stages rather than looping Pac-Man round to the other side of the screen in traditional fashion.
You'll need to have a Facebook account to make your own levels, but you can play the game through your browser via its dedicated webpage.
At the time of writing there are 2165 different screens – with that number going up fast.
The game was created as a promotion for Microsoft's new Internet Explorer 9 set-up, but should work fine on any browser running HTML5 or above.
"We are giving the world one of its favorite video games through the browser, in a fun and engaging way that truly showcases how developers can deliver a new class of web experiences by taking advantage of modern web standards and hardware acceleration," commented developer Michael Kordahi.

Looking at this odd bird of a device on display at the China Consumer Electronics Fair inspires tired cliches about mating gadgets. But really, it took a wild night between a Windows 7 tablet and a portable gaming console (with a possible cameo by a UMPC) to spawn the EraThink EraPalm. This handheld runs Windows 7 and has a 5-inch (800 x 480) capacative touchscreen that slides out to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard -- all of which is reminiscent of the extinct OQO Model 02, except for the gaming controls flanking the display. Newpad spent some with the little guy, and reports some netbook-like specs including an unspecified Atom Z processor, 3G connectivity, and Ethernet, HDMI, VGA, and USB ports. (Then again, it does one better with GPS and support for 1080p video.) Want a closer gawk? Click the source link for a couple more hands-on shots.

Porting Doom to unexpected devices may be one of the oldest tricks in the game-porting book, but seeing it (or Doom 2, no less) run in a somewhat playable fashion on an e-reader is still a feat worth noting. That was recently done on the as yet unreleased PocketBook 360 Plus e-reader, apparently in an effort to demonstrate its new Pearl E Ink display and Freescale processor. Head on past the break to check out the results for yourself -- and, no, Doom 2 unfortunately won't actually be included with the e-reader.

At a glance you might think it’s the real thing, but if you look closer you’ll see that The Distraction Contraption is an extremely well-executed cocktail cabinet recreation that hosts a MAME setup. [Sam Freeman] took pictures of the entire build process and has posted them, along with captions, as a Flickr collection.
The project started after some inspiration from this diminutive cocktail cabinet. He wanted his own version that was closer in scale to the coin-op versions that would have been found in bars a few decades ago. He designed the case to fit a 17″ LCD screen using Google Sketchup. From there, he cut out the parts and routed the edges. The controls feature buttons and joysticks, as you’d expect, but that red cap on the end works as a spinner. He tried out a few different ideas for this auxiliary control. He found that using LEGO gears to map the spinner’s motion to the axle of a mouse worked best. To give the plastic knob a better feel he loaded it with pennies to increase the mass, bringing momentum into play. The final look was achieved using wood-grain contact paper, and custom printed skins.

News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...es-monthly-83/
It’s been some time since my last post on Retrogaming Times Monthly and that’s not because I’ve been ignoring it, but rather the inability to effectively read through RTM’s new format. You see, for the past few months, RTM has been using a new online browsing method whereby you click tabs and arrows to go back and forth between pages. Nothing wrong with that per say, but try downloading the html to read it on the go, which I often do, and you’ll see that it just will not work. Previously, RTM was published on simple, but effective, one page html files, which could easily be downloaded and read anywhere. Anyway, I persisted for issue 83 as there are a handful of interesting articles within this strictly online ezine, including ‘Gaming Year In Review: 1983′, ‘Sega Rocks! – Burning Rangers’ and ‘MAME Reviews – Ninja-Kid II’. There is also the usual news and regular articles to read, so if you can put up with the convoluted browser interface, this is a fine read.
