Issue 87 of Retro Gamer should be hitting those store shelves right about now. It’s a Nintendo 64 special issue, with the 64-bit console gracing the front cover and featuring in The Collector’s Guide to the N64 article. Other highlights in the issue include Hail to the Duke (article on the Duke series past and present with Scott Miller and Randy Pitchford), The Making of Jet Set Willy II, The History of Shadow of the Beast (with creator Martin Edmondson), In the Chair with Al Lowe, The Making of the Lotus trilogy, all the usual regulars and lots more. There’s also a video preview of the issue at Darran Jones’ YouTube page. Retro Gamer is a UK dedicated retrogaming magazine, but with all the available ways to purchase the magazine (newsagents, online at the Imagine eShop or digital versions from iTunes), there’s no excuse to pick it up from anywhere around the world.

Toru Iwatani, the original creator of classic 1980 coin-op Pac-Man, has been discussing the creation process behind the game at GDC 2011, as well as his thoughts on modern game design.
"The reasons why I created Pac-Man was because we wanted to attract female gamers," he said - as reported by website Gamasutra.
"Back then there were no home games and people had to go to arcades to play games. That was a playground for boys. It was dirty and smelly. So we wanted to include girls or female players so that it would become cleaner and brighter."
However, Iwatani's concept of what girls might be interested in was not quite as enlightened: "I thought about something that may attract girls – maybe stories about boys or something to do with fashion?"
"However, girls love to eat desserts – my wife often eats desserts. The verb eat, that gave me a hint to create this game."
Once he had decided on the main gameplay mechanic Iwatani again tried to ensure the enemies would be interesting to a female audience. "I made the design very cute because some furious faces or expressions, girls probably don't like that," he said.
Iwatani recalls how the female president of Namco at the time was against the idea of multi-coloured ghosts and was concerned there would be confusion over whether they were your enemy or not. Iwatani organised a survey of what were essentially beta testers, which made it clear the multi-coloured ghosts was a good idea.
"She is a businesswoman, she judged from the numbers I gave her. She was a wonderful manager", recalled Iwatani.
One of the many innovations of the game was the different artificial intelligence algorithms of the four ghosts, which appeared to give each a different personality. The game's difficulty was also kept intentionally low at first, against the accepted wisdom of coin-ops at the time.
When comparing the game to modern titles though Iwatani was concerned that they appear overly complex and that their objectives are not immediately obvious to all players.
"Today's games, you don't see what the game is all about, what the goal is, and the controls are too complicated perhaps, and you're being sort of needled and persecuted sometimes," he said.
"The core game players want to have challenges, I understand that, but I think fun should be the first, most important point for any game."
Although still a beloved title, with titles such as Pac-Man Championship Edition DX earning wide critical acclaim, Namco has perhaps struggled to evolve the concept and character into other genres.
However, Iwatani's thought on the franchise's future is unexpected: "I'm thinking of a Pac-Man that's singing. I don't want to make it a musical, really, [like] Chicago the movie. The Blues Brothers maybe."

Famed game designer Eric Chahi shared an interesting yet somewhat terrifying anecdote about his legendary action-adventure Another World during his GDC talk today. It seemsAnother World nearly ended up being essentially another game.
According to Chahi, when he got to the point of shopping the game around to potential publishers, he initially approached (the now defunct) Virgin Interactive. The company proceeded to try and sway him to rework the game into a point-and-click adventure since "that's what was popular at the time."
Given the amount of work he'd already done on the game and the formidable task it would have been to re-tool all of it, Chahi decided to leave Another World alone. He went on to work with Delphine Software, which he described as being "very supportive" of the game as it was -- and how it will appear on iOS devices later this year.

There have been a fair share of portable video game console conversions over the years, but few tug at our retro-loving heart strings more than this one. Modretro forum member [Mario] constructed a fantastic looking portable Atari 2600 using a Flashback 2 Atari console clone.
He hacked apart the Flashback board to fit inside a small plastic case, then added a 3.5″ LCD screen, as well as some donated controller bits from other portable game systems. A pair of rechargeable batteries were added along with a small amplifier and speaker for sound.
While the Flashback comes with 40 games built in, he really wanted to add a cartridge port, so with the little bit of space he had left in the case, he did just that. When everything was finished, he sprayed on a few coats of retro orange paint and called it a day. Really the only thing that’s missing is some nice fake wood veneer and maybe some shag carpet.
Continue reading to see his portable creation in action.

Electronics giant Panasonic has confirmed that it has cancelled plans to release its handheld online gaming device, codenamed Jungle.
No explanation for the cancellation was offered, with a statement saying only that, 'Panasonic decided to suspend further development due to changes in the market and in our own strategic direction.'
The Jungle device was announced last October, to considerable puzzlement from analysts - especially given Panasonic's recent focus on environmental technology and healthcare. Nevertheless Panasonic established a new U.S. subsidiary, named Panasonic Cloud Entertainment, to develop the project.
The device was larger than a mobile phone but smaller than a laptop, with a clamshell design that featured a full keyboard, two circular touchpads and shoulder buttons. The device ran the Linux operating system and was primarily intended to run massively multiplayer online and browser-based games.
The only formally-announced title for the device though was BigPoint's massively multiplayer online title Battlestar Galactica.
Apart from announcing the recruitment of testers in December, nothing further was ever revealed about the device - which now seems likely to be quickly forgotten.
Unlike rival Sony, Panasonic has only ever dabbled in the games industry, most famously with its version of the 3DO platform in 1993 and the Japanese-only GameCube hybrid Q.

News via http://www.romhacking.net/forum/inde...pic,12254.html
It’s been a while since we’ve had any public discussion about this one, but now is not the time for talk. It’s time for action. That’s right, THE FF6 Hack gets a public demo, and one that is long overdue. What does this mean?- We’re still working on it yet, and we still have a long way to go before it’s finished.
- You guys get to rip us once again for what we do and do not have available for play.
Some of the changes you may (or may not) find during this demo:- A new dungeon!
- 118 bugs fixed, all from the original FF6 game. A special thanks to the many patch authors who released the fixes they did.
- Far too many core changes to improve the game. Having said that, make sure you take a peek in the configuration screen.
- Restoration of lost and removed content, which is mostly contained in dialogue.
- Item changes– some old, some new, some gone, so look around!
- Several event tweaks, a couple overhauls, and lots of additions. Yes, you will get to experience the Auction House, the Magitek Research Facility, and one banquet in particular.
Going into further detail would be long, boring, and tl;dr. In the end, after four years of work to this date, we think many will be pleased. However, since this is the internet, and for some it’s real life, we know that not everyone will be happy with some changes.
On behalf of the whole team, we thank everyone for their patience, their suggestions, and their feedback with this hack.
But enough talk, have at it! Make sure you read the readme, because nobody can help you if you don’t.

A new utility with a simple interface, but powerful functionality. Through the use of scripts that describe the layout of the target game file, it eases the re-integration of edited data by automatically relocating data that has grown in size, and updating program and pointer list references to the data. It is also capable of batch operations such as the initial extraction of the data, and the calling of external conversion utilities immediately after extraction, or immediately prior to injection.

I love gadgets as much as games consoles but this one had me in awe, over at Firebox.com they have on sale the Moller Skycar M400 which is a flying car, just look at the photo:
Once private air travel was the exclusive preserve of the rich and famous. Sadly, it still is, unless you happen to have the lion's share of half a million lying dormant in your bank account. The Skycar, though, has whipped the Firebox team into a collective frenzy with its vertical take off capability and vaguely enticing 380Mph top speed.
Unlike previous prototype Skycars, the M400 can comfortably seat four people, making a day trip to the south of France with your mates the equivalent of a two-hour blast down the motorway. That's when it goes on sale, of course, which isn't just yet.

News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...gamer-issue-4/
This is a publication that I’ve been meaning to discuss for some time now. PC Engine Gamer is an online digital retrogaming zine which is naturally dedicated to NEC’s underrated PC Engine console. So what can we expect to see in issue 4? Well, expect to read the latest PC Engine news in ‘Newstopia’, a retrospective review of Monster Lair (aka Wonder Boy III), there’s gaming cheats and help in ‘Fish and Tips’, a retrospective review of Rastan Saga II, Top Banana (where Sega’s Tyris Flare and Opa Opa go head to head), Dr. Bakuda’s Happy Hour, Gaming Tongue and The Final Countdown. The zine has a fantastic design, reads well and should be on everyone’s ‘to read’ list whether you’re a PC Engine gamer or not.

The Winnitron 1000 is an arcade machine that houses indie games you won't find anywhere else, including two-player versions of Canabalt and Super Crate Box. Usually, the only way to experience these games is to visit the machine's home at the LoPub in Winnipeg, but the collective that created it occasionally takes it on tour to events -- like, say, the Game Developers Conference.
As much as we hate to publicize this and increase our own time spent waiting in line, the Winnitron 1000 will be playable at GDC, in booth 1137. That booth will also be home to a series of talks by indie luminaries Vlambeer, Adam Saltsman, Kyle Pulver, Chevy Ray Johnston, and the Indie Game: The Movie crew. We hear you'll be able to hear these talks best from just outside of the Winnitron line.

Sure, folks have ported games over to the good ol' number cruncher for ages, but getting a fully rendered classic like Doom to run on a calculator is a different feat altogether. The folks over at omnimaga have successfully moved a beta version of nDoom (a reworked version of the original id Software's FPS) over to a Texas Instruments TI-Nspire and -- with all things considered -- the game runs shockingly smooth. As of right now, the only proof of concept is the video you see above, with a tragic crash bringing all things dangerous to a dismal halt. We're looking forward to a fully working version of nDoom because, you know, video games and calculators are two things close to our nerdy hearts.

If you asked us to drop $350 for 23 pieces of laser-cut plastic, we'd probably shoo you away, but it's hard to resist the incredible charm of the Nanocade. Besides, designer Rasmus Sorensen's actually selling the miniature arcade cabinet parts for just $229 right now, which makes the decision to finally build your own MAME machine a wee bit more affordable. You'll still need to supply all the internals yourself, including buttons, an arcade stick, a monitor and glue, and even should you succeed, good luck prying guests away from your new coffee table conversation piece. Find the basic kit in your choice of Midnight Black or Arctic White at our source link.
Note: It's a bit of a bummer, but the Nanocade website says that handsome curved control panel displayed above actually isn't part of the initial kit -- it comes with a pair of flat pieces that meet at a (seemingly) wrist-chafing angle instead.

Unfortunately, it looks like aishsha won’t be able to finish translating Silva Saga II for the Super Famicom, due to timing and other circumstances. Dynamic Designs estimates around 75% of the text is finished between Akujin and aishsha’s work. They are looking for someone willing to finish off the rest. Though it seems aishsha will be assisting D-D in ensuring that, in the end, names and such are consistent with aishsha’s own translation of Silva Saga I.

news via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...e-amstrad-cpc/
Sub Hunter is an excellent Commodore 64 shoot-’em-up/rescue game (read our review of the game in issue 1), developed by Richard Bayliss & Frank Gasking and released through Psytronik, so it’s fantastic news to hear that it has been ported over to the Amstrad CPC. Paul Kooistra, who has such recent CPC hits as Star Sabre and Dead on Time has done a fantastic job converting this little gem of a game and it looks as good as – if not better – than the original C64 version.
The game’s premise and design remains untouched – a scientific experiment has gone wrong and the sea is teaming with mutated fish and it’s the player’s job to dive the depths of the seas to rescue the human swimmers, while blasting the creatures. With twenty five levels of sub-aquatic blasting and rescuing, multi-layered parallax scrolling, CPC soundtracks by Herve Monchatre, Shark attacks, rescue missions, bonus stages, multi-coloured graphics & animation and an intro sequence featuring hi-res graphics, CPC gamers are in for a treat. Sub Hunter will be physically released on tape, a Premium 3″ disk and as a free digital download for the Amstrad CPC.
