The core of how people first learn to do stuff — programming, music, writing, etc. — is to imitate others. It's one of the best ways to learn. Apparently a bunch of students using MIT's educational Scratch programming language understand this. But not everyone else does. NAMCO Bandai sent a takedown notice to MIT because some kids had recreated Pac-man with Scratch. The NAMCO letter is pretty condescending as well, noting that it understands the educational purpose of Scratch, but 'part of their education should include concern for the intellectual property of others.

News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...on-atari-2600/
An astonishing development as Halo has been converted to the humble Atari 2600 console. While the visuals and design mechanics of the Xbox original couldn’t possibly be converted to the 2600, the developer has produced a fine run-’n'-gun version spanning dozens of screens. Still taking control of Master Chief, the player has to negotiate through enemy lines, grabbing power-ups, weapons – and all this in a 4K game. The game was released in cartrdige form at the recent Classic Gaming Expo, but emulator images have also been made available to download.

News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...n-zx-spectrum/
Mojon Twins? Survival Horror? ZX Spectrum? Yes please. And that’s exactly what we’ve got with the twins’ latest ZX Spectrum offering. The player takes control of Santos Gimenez — a graveyard differ, no less — as he searches for his lost wife. However, along the way monsters will hinder our hero’s progress, but, luckily, Santos carries a rather handy shotgun. Alternatively, Santos can evade the fiends with a little cunning hide and run tactics. Yup, there is some nifty stealth gameplay in here, adding to the fun. The game’s download, cover art and more game details can be found at the Mojon Twins’ website

[Retromaster's] Ultimate Floppy Emulator is a wicked display of hardware mastery. It is the culmination of several design stages aimed at replacing an Amiga floppy drive with a modern storage solution. You may be thinking that using an SD card in place of a floppy isn’t all that interesting but this hack does much more. The board, controlled by a PIC32, patches into the Amiga keyboard and monitor. This allows you to bring up an overlay menu for controlling the emulator in order to configure which virtual floppy disk is currently ‘in the drive’. He’s even gone so far as to add a piezo speaker to mimic the sounds the original drive head would make while reading a disk.

July 28th, 2010, 20:52 Posted By: wraggster
There's been a movement to preserve virtual worlds but MIT's Tech Review paints a dire picture of our video game memories rotting away in the attic of history. From the article: 'Entire libraries face extinction the moment the last remaining working console of its kind — a Neo Geo, Atari 2600 or something more obscure, like the Fairchild Channel F — bites the dust.' Published in The International Journal of Digital Curation, a new paper highlights this problem and explains how emulators fall short to truly preserve our video game heritage. The paper also breaks down popular SNES emulators to illustrate the growing problem with emulators and their varying quality. Do you remember any video consoles like the Magnavox Odyssey that are forever lost to the ages?
