After around six years in development this complete hack of Super Metroid is finally done. It’s been a bumpy road with more times then I can count where I have lost confidence in my ability to finish this solo project.
But now, behold, it is done!
You can read more about the hack itself once you make the jump to the the page for it.

Enjoy a little Grand Master this labor day. It’s a cool little NES action RPG that deserves your attention. In other news, not to boast but this is my second major patch within a months time. Incredible, isn’t it? Also I am looking for a website designer and welcome a nicely designed website that isn’t incredibly simplistic/obscure/hard to read at times.

So here’s one there hasn’t been any news on in a while! Recently, I did some tinkering with Super Nazo Puyu Tsuu (or, as it will probably be called it, “Super Puzzle Puyo, Too!”) The full main dialog script has been inserted, whereas before only about two thirds of it had found its way into the game. The project has been brought up to date with current tools (instead of tools from, say, 2003 or earlier) and roughly half of the script has been edited. No work on the menu systems yet, though they shouldn’t pose too much of a problem. I’ve also added 23 new screenshots to the game’s project page, a link to which you can find at the top of this post. As usual I can’t say when it’ll be done, other than “soon, I hope.”

News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...aniac-issue-1/
Hearing about and reading RetoManiac was like a rollercoaster for us. First we were up with the excellent points of this new ezine, the next, we were zooming back down with some of the lesser good points. Let us explain ourselves here…
First things first, RetroManiac is a new Spanish retrogaming ezine, produced in glorious PDF and available to download for free. It contains some great articles on classic video games, including a retrospective on the Streets of Rage series, the Spectrum, Retro Gamer ‘Retro Revival’ style articles on the likes of Toki, Bruce Lee, Dune 2, and lots more. That’s excellent. It also reviews new games released on the current generation of consoles. That’s not so good.
The contents page and reviews index page have anchor links to their respective pages. That’s very good (we haven’t seen that since, well, Retroaction). However, the page format chosen is a weird one. The front cover is a normal A4 portrait, but as soon as the content page kicks in, the format changes to an elongated landscape style. Nothing wrong with that you might say – Retroaction does something similar – but this seems to be designed as two pages joined for printing, rather than designed as a digital page for the screen.
The writing, what I can make out, looks very good. Detailed when needed and less when required. Good. In amongst the new games reviews are Monkey Island 2 Special Edition and, erm, some other, supposedly, retro styled games. Not too good.
The design of the RetroManiac is brilliant. The layouts, overlays, text boxes and images are all put together with some real professionalism here. Bravo to the designer. By the time I got to the latter pages I noticed there was no bookmarks available – I couldn’t jump back to a particular page. This means the delightful contents page, with its superb anchor links directing the reader to the relevant page with the click of a mouse is made redundant. But we’re really grasping at straws for faults at this point and the guys who produced RetroManiac must be congratulated on their first issue.
So with a group of passionate writers, contributors and a designer, you can produce a free ezine that would not look out of place sitting next to Retro Gamer. Other publishers of similar ezines take note.
And it must be said that it is just their first issue. Improvements and additions to the format will no doubt take place for future issues. Maybe an English version as well? I’m sure I can say for all that we are looking forward to issue 2.

iFixit, is no device safe from the scars of your screwdriver? These eyes have been scarred, forced to witness the destruction of yet another childhood icon. Previously it was the RCA Studio II and the Magnavox Odyssey 100 before that. Now it's the rather more memorable Atari 2600 going under the scalpel, four simple screws removed to reveal an eight-bit, 1.19MHz processor featuring 128 bytes of RAM (yes, a massive 1,024 bits) and a graphics adapter capable of 192 x 160 resolution with 128 colors -- though only four could be used on any given line. Through these humble beginnings the cartridge-based console was born... and now here it rests.

News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...leased-on-msx/
One of the most anticipated new games releases on the MSX is finally here. QBIQS, which has been in development for four years, has been completed and entered into the MSXdev ’10 game making competition. The game is a remake of Konami’s Quarth, a puzzle game/shoot-’em-up hybrid arcade game that was released in the arcades in 1989 and subsequently converted to a handful of home machines, including the MSX2. As usual with MSXdev entries, QBIQS is available to download free along with manual and sticker.

Samsung has become the latest challenger to enter the tablet computer battle, unveiling its Galaxy Tab at the IFA conference in Berlin.
The device will run on Google's Android operating system, with a capacity of 16 or 32Gb, expandable by 32Gb more.
It weighs 380g (14oz), and has an 18cm (7in) screen - smaller and lighter than its principal rival the iPad.
Vodafone has announced that it will distribute the device in European markets including the UK in October.
The tablet can connect via 3G networks, as well as wi-fi and Bluetooth.
It will employ Samsung's "Reader's Hub" for e-books and the "Media Hub" for music and videos. It supports Flash video and will be able to stream content to a TV.
Samsung called it "the first of the company's tablet devices", suggesting further models will be forthcoming.
"Samsung recognises the tremendous growth potential in this newly-created market and we believe that the Samsung Galaxy Tab brings a unique and open proposition to market," said Samsung's head of mobile communications JK Shin.

Analysis
Rory Cellan-Jones
Technology correspondent, BBC News
At first sight, Samsung's Galaxy Tab looks to have more to it than the iPad.
Samsung says its research shows people want this device to be useable on the move and they need to be able to communicate with it.
So the Tab can make calls - and video calls, as well as all the video, music and book content that you get on an iPad.
You'll be able to access millions of books, plus newspapers and magazines - Samsung even says that "we expect the Tab to play an important role in the digitalization of printed material".
"There is a new and emerging consumer demand that Samsung can satisfy since mobile is in our DNA."
Vodafone's Patrick Chomet said that the firm is "pleased to be introducing" the Galaxy Tab.
"Adding tablets as part of our device range is a natural next step that gives customers an alternative way to enjoy great content and internet services," he said.
Technology analysts CCS Insight said that Samsung had joined the tablet melee with an "attractive device and strong service offer", calling the 7-inch size an "appealing form factor".
However they note that in a market with an increasing number of tablet competitors, pricing will become the crucial issue.

After having restored the sound of Final Fantasy V Advance, now a similar hack comes out with Final Fantasy VI. This hack completely restore the music’s quality from the SNES version. The restoration is even better to what have been done with Final Fantasy V advance, as all songs were re-sequenced.
I should also mention that streamed pieces of opera are played instead of low-quality synthetic opera.

News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...e-august-1990/
“Smash TV crashed into the arcades, Kick Off 2 kicked the other soccer games in to touch, Midnight Resistance impressed all and Italy 1990 topped the All Formats Top 20 Chart…” That was August 1990 and this is ‘Back in Time’, Out-of-Print Archive’s monthly lookback at the classic video gaming magazines twenty years ago, which is written by this author. To accompany the biggest edition of ‘Back in Time’ yet, with 20 magazine titles covered, a handful of online articles were selected from the magazines: Amiga Action’s review of Kick Off II, The Games Machine’s review of Venus The Flytrap (Amiga), Computer & Video Game’s review of Smash TV (Arcade) and YC’s review of Murder (C64).

We have a fondness for Commodore computers (as you've probably noticed by now) and we are psyched that Commodore USA is still flying the flag for the once-ubiquitous brand, but as they always are in this biz, things are a little... complicated. We were first contacted way back in March when the company shared the news that it had acquired the rights to sell PCs under the name. Then what happened? Turns out this was not exactly the case... although CEO Barry Altman assured us that they were on their way towards hammering out a deal. And here we are, in possession of a press release saying that indeed, Commodore USA, LLC, and Commodore Licensing B.V. have finally come to an agreement, meaning that your subsequent purchases will at least come with a Commodore decal. But that ain't all! This also paves the way for the company's newest offering, the Commodore PC64, an Intel Atom-powered PC featuring 4GB DDR3 memory, SATA 1TB HDD, HDMI output, optical drive (either DVD/CD or optional Blu-ray), and more -- all in "an exact replica" of the original beige C64 chassis. Of course, doing any significant amount of work with the original Commodore keyboard will probably be a challenge, but we like to think we're up to it. As always, we'll believe it when we see it, but in the meantime we'd like to be the first to formally request a review unit. If everything goes according to plan, this bad boy should be out in time for the holidays.

News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...leased-on-c64/
The original Bionic Granny has been hailed as one of the worst games in gaming history, even being bestowed with the ‘Retro Shamer’ title in an issue of Retro Gamer, so why would you want to revisit the game? Well, The New Dimension (programming, graphics and music by Richard Bayliss) probably thought they could make it playable, because, despite the original game’s atrociousness, there is some wicked humour in there. The plot? Well, not content with clobbering school kids with her walking stick, Bionik Granny now takes her anger out on any innocent citizens. By taking out five nuisances (i.e. innocent people) Granny will be rewarded with a gold coin. There are eight levels to play through including bonuses along the way.

mic_ posted an entry into the Neoflash Coding Contest:
Heres the details:
Nickname: mic
Project name: Hunter
From: Sweden
Division: Retro APP
Platform: PC-E
Original enter: YES
Support Motion: NO(?)
In last NEO Compo this project have won in the top 10: NO
Project description:
It plays NSFs on the TurboGrafx / PC-Engine. NSF is the format used for ripping soundtracks from NES / Famicom games.
How to use:
Creating the player ROM
-----------------------
Start rombuilder.exe. Drag the NSF files to the top listbox, then press "Build". A ROM
named hunter.pce will be generated in the same directory as the rombuilder.
Only up to 15 NSFs will be added to the ROM.
Each NSF must be <= 32 kB in size.
Some NSFs will not play correctly (or at all) even if they were added successfully by the
rombuilder. This might be because they rely on some feature not supported by my player.
Some examples of NSFs that will not play correctly are Metroid, Rygar, Star Force and Rush'n Attack.
DMC is not supported, and will simply not be heard. No extra sound hardware is supported either
(such as FDS, MMC5 or N106).
Using the player
----------------
Run the generated hunter.pce file in an emulator (like mednafen), or on your TurboGrafx / PC-E.
[Up/Down] navigates through the NSF list.
[Left/Right] navigates through the sub-songs of the currently playing NSF.
[II] starts playback of the highlighted NSF/song.
[ I] restarts playback of the currently playing NSF/song.
[Select] toggles volume overdrive mode. When active, it boosts the volume of the square wave and noise
channels, which can be useful for soundtracks that have low volumes (like Ninja Gaiden, Metal Gear,
Silver Surfer, etc).
[Run] toggles the playback speed. If the NSF's original speed is NTSC it will switch to PAL, and vice
versa.
Made another update (the link in the original post has been changed to point to the latest archive). The latest source code is also available for download. The link to the code is in the second post.
I've fixed a bug in the handling of the noise channel's length counter. The drums in Super Mario Bros and Super Mario Bros 3 should now sound a lot better.
I've also modified the rombuilder to pad the output .PCE file to a multiple of 256 kB. That should solve any random freezes that could result from an odd ROM size causing the wrong bank to be switched in.
