News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...print-archive/
The second issue of N64 Magazine from May 1997 has just been archived over at Out-of-Print Archive. The N64 focused magazine was the spiritual successor to the classic Super Play, retaining much of the feel of that magazine along with some familiar staff. Thanks to meppi, who scanned and edited this release, we can all relive this classic magazine once more. The release comes with four online articles, taken from the magazine itself, and includes reviews of Blast Corps, Waverace 64 and Doom 64, along with an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto.

What is Grandia ReDux?
Grandia ReDux is a mod which vastly improves Grandia’s gameplay by refining certain gameplay elements within the game. Here is a list of things that the mod changes in the game:
1. Difficulty level
•Enemies have all been made stronger so that combat is more satisfying or challenging, especially in the main story.
•The abusive recovery option has been removed from a majority of savepoints. However, enemies will now drop more recovery items to make sure it’s not too easy to run out of resources.
2. Skills and magic
•All skills and magic have been re-balanced in a number of ways.
•Certain skills and magic have had their damage or healing effects increased or reduced.
•SP and MP costs for most skills and magic have been greatly increased, or in other cases, decreased.
•Buffs and Debuffs now have an improved role within the game and also now scale with magic level.
•IP cancelling have been changed for a majority of skills and magic. For example, lower level magic such as Burn or Howl have an increased chance to cancel attacks than higher level magic, making them much more useful at later stages of the game.
•IP knockback has been changed for a majority of skills and magic. Most AoE skills and magic now cause no IP knockback.
•Weapon or magic EXP gained from certain skills and magic have been changed. For example, single target abilities now provide more EXP, while AoE abilities a bit less (or a lot in some cases).
•The radius or target mechanics of some skills and magic have been changed.
•Requirements for spells and skills have been changed.
•NEW spells and skills.
3. Items
•Certain items have been re-balanced.
•Prices of certain items have been increased or decreased.
•Some items now have different or new properties.
•Certain shops now sell different items or additional ones.
•NEW items!
•Translation fixes.
4. Character statistics
•All eight characters or party members have had their statistics re-balanced.
•All characters start off with much higher MP than before. Due to the fact that spells now cost a lot more MP than before, this change was needed. This change will allow you to use magic more freely at the start of the game as a result.
•Characters now learn different spells.

Panasonic has begun recruiting testers for its forthcoming handheld, codenamed Jungle, in the US.
Bloomberg reports that the company sent emails to potential testers yesterday. No further details of the device's capabilities were confirmed in the email, although Panasonic did clarify the Jungle's focus on online titles.
"We know other companies out there have traditional handheld gaming covered," the email read. "We're doing something very different."
Panasonic announced the Jungle earlier this year, alongside a few speculative technical details.
The device has a handful of games confirmed for it so far, including Bigpoint's unreleased Battlestar Galactica browser title. GamesIndustry.biz spoke to Bigpoint CEO Heiko Hubertz about his company's involvement with the launch in an interview last month

A dungeon crawler from 1992 created by Hacker International, maker of unlicensed games for the Famicom/NES and PCE, Lady Sword now has an English language patch!
Unfettered by pesky contracts with console manufacturers, Hacker International games tend to include content not normally found in console releases. This makes Lady Sword a unique and somewhat bizarre piece of dungeon crawler history. I highly recommend that everyone check out the developer diary, an Easter egg discovered within the script, in the read me for some insight into the production of this game.
This game is for the PCE and the translation patch is packaged with an optional infinite health/full strength patch. Many thanks to Esperknight, Tomaitheous, Grant Laughlin, Eien ni Hen, Paul Acevedo, Gabriel Jones, Enigmaopoeia and all those who worked on the game past and present! Enjoy!

In an interesting move for a major console launch, Panasonic is reaching outside of the fold and looking to some select US consumers to test out its upcoming Jungle gaming handheld. No details on the testing program were given, and it's not much in the way of news, but it's the most we've heard out of Panasonic since it announced the online gaming-centric handheld in October -- we still don't know when the Jungle will land or how much it will cost. At least Panasonic isn't short on self-assessment: "We know other companies out there have traditional hand- held gaming covered... We're doing something very different." You can't argue with that, we'll just have to wait and see if Panasonic can pull it off.

Sweet, sweet Game Gripper. You make smartphone gaming a rather less cramping experience, and now you're spreading joy to the fourth generation. Owners of Sprint Epic 4G can now get their Gripper on, and can do so with a lovely new Genesis-inspired layout that offers two rows of three buttons plus a D-pad -- and then another four buttons for good measure. It's rather excitedly demonstrated after the break and, like the earlier models, will set you back $14.99. Now, if only we could get handset makers to start adding shoulder buttons on their cellies.

[Bomber Punk] built his own arcade cabinet, but you won’t find any MAME games here. He made the enclosure to house a Meggy Jr. 8×8 pixel graphics game console. Proper coin-op buttons and a joystick replace the stock tactile switches that come with the kit. [Bomber Punk] has also added a lighted coin slot. A three-cell battery pack powers the beast, with a programming port to one side so that different games can be loaded from a PC. We’d like to see a processor upgrade that would allow multiple games to be stored on a stand-alone system.

Dreamcast Advanced Daisenryaku 2001 - v0.95 Patch November 23, 2010
By Nebelwurfer HQ
This patch translates all the remaining Scenarios from the Campaign and Scenario Modes. All 112 Game Scenarios are now translated.
The game is playable as it is, but there are a few minor annoyances that could be tweaked. I may address these at some point in 2011, but I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for any further patches if I were you. There are too many other games out there that need translating like Standard Daisenryaku: Lost Victory on the PS2.
Remaining Tasks:
•There are several Japanese error messages that are displayed when you attempt to select a command that is disabled, etc.
•The Faction names and Scenario names are still in Japanese. I know where the text is stored, but when I change it the game no longer loads. This is probably the only change that would justify a new patch if I can ever figure it out.
•Translate the Help Topics used in Scenario Editor Mode.
•Translate the Advice that your Staff gives you while playing a scenario.
Those who are interested in a quick summary of what this game is all about can view the following link, which includes a lot of game screenshots as well as the game rules. At the very end is a collection of weapons that I have found useful in the early game period.

Nanako in Classic Japanese Monster Castle “follows Nanako and her quest to rescue her younger sister, Mya, who has got herself into a bit of bother involving dark magic and an evil tower”. This means platforming, puzzling fun as you advance the 25 odd levels to reach your goal. I’m getting deja vu all over again…
Yep, having been available on the Spectrum for around two years and the Amstrad CPC for about a year, Nanako in Classic Japanese Monster Castle now makes it to the C64, courtesy of Inside who have converted the original Mojon Twins’ with some style. It feels just like the old days with a major game being released on all three major 8-bit formats. There’s also a video preview of the game running, which can be found here. The game itself can be downloaded for free and obtained in physical form on the Inside website.

SWIV shot up the opposing shoot-‘em-ups on the Amiga, Midnight Resistance run-‘n’-gunned its way from the arcades onto the C64, Speedball 2 made for a brutal futuristic sport on the Atari ST and Rick Dangerous began his multi-format domination in his multi-accolade winning sequel. All this must mean it’s time for another visit ‘Back in Time’. ‘Back in Time’ is my monthly article over at Out-of-Print Archive where we look back at the classic video gaming magazines twenty years ago this month. Accompanying the main article are four chosen reviews from the magazines featured, including the aforementioned SWIV (Amiga) from Zero issue 13, Midnight Resistance (C64) from YC issue 73, Speedball 2 (Atari ST) from The One issue 26 and Rick Dangerous 2 (Amstrad CPC) from Amstrad Action issue 62.

A lot of thought went into [Patrick Mccabe's] Pong gaming console build. He used components we’re familiar with; an Arduino as a controller, 8×8 LED modules as the display, and potentiometers (with fancy knobs) in project boxes as the controllers. But every step along the way he took care to build this cleanly and robustly. Even the MAX7219CNG drivers for the six LED modules reside on PCBs from a fab house. The finished project is something you’d be proud to pull out and play when you have friends over. Even if they’re not part of the geek elite we think they’d enjoy a game or two. Great job [Patrick]. We hope to see an internalized microcontroller and scoring in your next update!
Want to do this but the cost of the matrix drivers scared you away? Follow our tutorial to build your own display using an AVR for the multiplexing.

Dorks from outer space have invaded Earth and it’s your job as an ace space pilot to take them down. To defeat them, you will need to gather all the parts to a “definitive weapon” called the Genesis. This means good old shoot-’em-up fun through five planets before you can take on the might of the Dorks. utopian had started development on this ZX Spectrum several years ago and has now been completed with the help of the Retroworks staff. The game can be found at Retroworks’ website, where you can find the Spectrum tape image, Spectrum disk image, Cover art and high quality cassette inlay coverart.

News via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...amer-issue-83/
Wow, it only seems like a couple of weeks since I got the last issue of Retro Gamer, but it’s probably more realistically four weeks. With issue 83, Retro Gamer have gone all Nintendo crazy again fronted by cover feature ‘Going Ape – The History of Donkey Kong Country’ and the Nintendo loving continues with ‘Coin-Op Capers: Donkey Kong’. Also featured inside is ‘A Moment With… Jim Bagley’, ‘Cheap as Chips: Heimdall’, ‘Obscura Machina: C64GS’, ‘Don’t Copy That Floppy’ (an interesting feature on videogame piracy), ‘From The Archives: Radical Software’, ‘The Making of… Primal Rage’, as well as the regular ‘Back to the Eighties’/’Nineties’, ‘The Unconverted’ and more. The magazine is in UK stores now and will be available across the globe pretty soon-ish. And if you don’t like waiting or chasing down each issue then head over to the website and set up a subscription.

I am just passing the word along because this may be useful to fan translators and ROM hackers.
Many people have complained about the www. gamereproductions. com selling their work, so I decided to do something about it. As of today, he is no longer selling Der Langrisser.
I filed a DMCA takedown request with his Web host, after which HostMonster.com disabled his page and contacted him. He removed the Der Langrisser translation from his offerings and the site is back up.
The way I did this was by using a CreativeCommons license that forbids derivative works to license our patch software. This effectively required all users to break the license agreement to use our patch. Therefore, any website hosting or selling a patched Der Langrisser ROM became open to DMCA takedowns from both our team and Extreme Co., Ltd.
I also embedded two of my original font designs in the game in binary, because the US Supreme Court has already ruled that the binary representations of fonts – not their actual appearance – are subject to copyright: this was an ace in the hole in case my CreativeCommons plan failed.
You can find the wording of my takedown request and the logic behind why it works in the attached thread. I hope this will be useful to other fan translators seeking to exercise some control over the sale and distribution of their work.
