It’s been a long three years, but Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru, or For the Frog the Bell Tolls is finally playable in English. This hilarious game has you take on the role of the impetuous but good-natured Prince of Sable. As the Prince, you must save Princess Tiramisu and the dessert and frog themed land of Mille-Feuille from the evil Lord Delarin…and do so before your rival, the valiant Prince Richard, beats you to it.
Gameplay is a mix of platforming action and simple RPG elements. The engine for this game went on to be used for Link’s Awakening, and many elements were borrowed for later Zelda and Nintendo games.
This patch is likely my first and last big gift back to the community whose works I’ve enjoyed so much over the years. It isn’t perfect, but countless hours of revisions and testing have gone into capturing at least a portion of the original’s wit and humor.
Enjoy!

Always wanted an 80's arcade cabinet for your living room, but the square footage in your studio apartment won't cooperate with your gaming plans? Well, a master mini craftsman has created a seven-inch replica of Space Invaders that can fit on your desktop, coffee table, or bedside stand. It was cobbled together using the guts of a Game Boy Advance, some lilliputian controls, and a custom cabinet coated in shrunken decals that's made of medium density fiberboard. Best of all, thanks to those Nintendo internals, there's an entire arcade's worth of games at your tiny fingertips. Between this and its diminutive Donkey Kong cousin, perhaps mini arcade cabinets are the future of gaming. Video of the little gem in action is after the break.

30 years ago this month, Nintendo released Donkey Kong — an iconic arcade machine that put the company on the video game map and introduced Mario. Technologizer's Benj Edwards celebrated the anniversary by rounding up some of the game's odder sidelights. For instance, it was originally going to be a game about Popeye, Bluto, and Olive Oyl — and among its stranger offshoots was a pocket-sized game in which Donkey Kong and Mario faced off in hockey."
Gamasutra has a more detailed article about the game's development.

Atari Interactive has filed a $30 million lawsuit against distribution company Tommo for selling counterfeit versions of its Flashback 2 console.
The plug-and-play Flashback 2 was released in 2005. It was modeled on the company's landmark Atari 2600 console and contained 40 games, most of which were from the 2600 era. The hardware sold 860,000 units, and was discontinued in 2006.
According to Gamasutra, the bootleg consoles and packagaing are cosmetically identical to the Flashback 2 design, prompting original manufacturer Legacy Engineering to speculate that the counterfeiters had access to the source files and molds. However, glitches have been reported in several of the games that were not present in the Flashback 2.
Tommo was founded in 1989 as a wholesaler of imported videogames, and is now one of America's leading third-party suppliers of game hardware and software.
Atari is claiming that more than 80 of its copyrights have been violated, and is seeking damages of $150,000 for each one.

We know a few of you have been waiting with bated breath for the retooled Commodore C64 to arrive, so we're not at all surprised that the first people to claim one are wasting no time putting its tactile keys through its paces. In that clip you see below, YouTube user "EternalPtah" places the three decades-old original next to its Atom-powered successor, comparing everything from the beige color to the height of the function keys. All told, he reassures us, the twenty-first century iteration is a worthy follow-up to the vintage model, even if it does replace the power light with a button. If you've got four minutes to spare, hit play for what will probably be the most nostalgic hands-on you see this week.

"Lots of people are familiar with open source software. Open source hardware, however, is still more of niche category. The Uzebox is an open source, 'retro minimalist' 8-bit games console, licensed under version 3.0 of the GNU GPL. 'The console uses an overclocked ATmega644 microcontroller and classic Super Nintendo controllers, supports 256 colors and 4 sound channels and has an SD card interface from which games can be loaded from

Joint effort to improve speech recognition and synthesis
A group of British universities are aiming to push forward efforts to create better intelligent speech recognition systems which, they claim, will soon result in human-like interaction with computers.
Researchers from the universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh and Sheffield announced a five year £6.2 million project aimed at using advanced computing techniques that will be able to understand spoken language and synthesise natural-sounding voice.
The researchers said that technology may soon be available which can recognise the voices of individuals and could become familiar with the expressions, accent and vocabulary of individual speakers.
"This research could open the door to computer speech technology becoming commonplace throughout our lives - at home, at work, and in our leisure time," said University of Edinburgh Professor Steve Renals.
Besides a new class of chatty gadgets, uses of the new speech technology include the potential to create voice-controlled devices for the home, which could help older people stay independent.

Oversleeping sucks, but we’ve all been there. Whether its a matter of hitting the snooze button a dozen times too many, or turning off the alarm and drifting back to sleep – sooner or later, you are going to wake up late.
Instructables user [nolte919] has overslept a time or two in his life, and he set out to design a clock that would make it nearly impossible to wake up late. His clock is Arduino-based and shares many features with off the shelf models including multiple alarms, a backup battery, and snooze features. His alarm however goes one step further and ensures you are fully awake each morning.
If you hit the user-defined snooze limit, the alarm sounds and will not turn off until you have cleared 4 lines in Tetris. That’s right, you have to prove to the clock that you are awake and coherent before it will shut off. Technically you can silence the alarm for a 30 second period so you can focus on Tetris, but that’s all the break you get.
It really is a novel way of ensuring you are awake in the morning, and heck, how bad can the day be when you start off by playing video games for a few minutes?
Stick around to see a quick video of his Tetris alarm clock in action.

Very probably based on true events, new Commodore 64 SEUCK based game, Escape From the Annoying Chavs, tasks the player with having to traverse the decidedly dodgy streets to his local pub. Controlling hard working Richard, the player will have to contend with the constant danger of youths who like nothing better than loitering around street corners, throwing, ahem, feces, glass bottles and generally being a nuisance. Thankfully, Richard is armed with some coconuts that he can fight back with. Coded by Joshua Green and released as part of the Sideways SEUCK Compo 2011, the game can be downloaded in tape or disk format in PAL or NTSC versions. Let the street battles commence…

Jagulator v2.0.2 is released. Jagulator is an Atari Jaguar console emulator. Jagulator is designed to be run on the Microsoft Windows range of Operating Systems and uses OpenGL as the graphics subsystem.
Jagulator v2.0.2 Changelog:
Update #2: Release 2.0.2 (GUI Release) is available for download HERE. Please be advised this is still development code but should make the loading of roms and binaries a lot easier. Some things to note;
- After extracting the contents of the zip file into your chosen location you will need to edit the 'jagulator.ini' file in the root jagulator directory and change to bootpath and rompath to match your installation location.
- You can load roms, binaries or initiate the Jaguar CD Bios from the 'File' menu.
- All roms and binaries selected will start automatically after loading.
- The video output screen will now center on your desktop.
- When loading a binary you will be promoted for the load address after file selection.
- Pressing Escape will stop execution. If you wish to try another rom/binary after you have just run one I would advise using the File | Reset before attempting to load another.
- Please remember this is not fully stable code yet and some titles do not run, others have a tendancy to crash the emu. I am working like crazy to knock down all the issues.
- Please send me feedback on specific issues so that I can improve your experience of Jagulator.
Update #1: I am putting the finishing touches to the basic GUI for Jagulator and will start testing this evening prior to a release. During some seperate testing it seems that 2.0.2 is now starting to run further games, although not all playable, this is progress. I have updated the screenshots on the status page with the newly working titles. Head on over to the status page !!!

A no-name PMP selling for $179 at Brando -- purveyor of all things inexpensive, electronic and often USB-powered -- may not ordinarily make the grade for us, but this so-called Gadmei P83 device has one somewhat notable trick up its sleeve. It packs an 8-inch, 1,280 x 768 display that's able to do glasses-free 3D video. Of course, you're left to yourself to actually hunt down or provide your own compatible video files, and the PMP itself is decidedly ordinary otherwise: 4GB of storage, an SD card slot for expansion, and the usual media playback capabilities and nothing more (no one's going to confuse this for a tablet). Still curious? Head on past the break for a video that offers a slightly more accurate depiction of the device than the image above.

Robert Pelloni and his team are working to develop an indie handheld gaming console, the 'nD,' which will run a number of indie games. The device will support 2D games only, and will run a custom-developed, embedded Linux firmware. It will have its own Game Store, which will allow users to download games. The SDK will be released soon, and is based on open source gaming standard SDL. Developers are being told that they can actually start making and compiling games on Windows, Mac and Linux using a 320x240 resolution.

This one’s a bit abstract. Remember those LCD games that became quite popular sometime in the 1990′s? You know, the ones that had only one game, usually a character that could be moved back and forth to catch, hit, or block objects falling from the sky or being thrown by some villain? [Tobie Nortje] sure remembers them and has built an Arduino controller to play virtual versions of the games.
He started off by finding a website that is digitizing the old games. That is to say, they’ve taken images of each state of the LCD, then implemented the game play using those images and an approximation of the original physics. Unlike NES or Sega Master System games the ROMs of these devices can’t just be dumped because of the specialized screen. Instead, a virtual version of the hardware has been built into a web interface.
[Tobie's] part of the hack is to use an Arduino and a few buttons as the controller. It’s easy to set up and we think the breadboarded controller approximates the size and weight of an LCD game pretty well. Check out the video after the break and let us know what you think in the comments.

[Owen] just finished putting together a portable helicopter game. It’s pretty impressive, especially since he used an ATtiny13 microcontroller. That chip uses an 8-pin dip package, offering only five I/O pins (six if you use the reset pin) and 1k of programming space.
The game runs on a small cellphone-type LCD screen. The helicopter remains somewhere in the center column of the screen as the maze that makes up the game board approaches one step at a time. The single button that controls the helicopter will raise it with each step of the maze when held down, or allow it to fall when released. The player’s progress is shown as a hex value in the upper left corner of the screen. When you hit a wall, your score will be shown next to the high score for the game and will be saved in EEPROM if it’s a new record. As the game progresses, the maze gets harder based on the score. Check it out in a video clip after the break.
