“‘Back in Time’ is a monthly feature where we look back at the classic video gaming magazines twenty years ago this month. This month it’s September 1991 and the Super Famicom was beginning to make head roads on the gaming scene with titles such as U.N. Squadron, while two classics, Streets of Rage and Road Rash, hit the Mega Drive and God sims were big time with the excellent Mega lo Mania dominating the Amiga, and in the 8-bit scene, we said our farewells to one of the longest running C64 magazines…”

[Alex] wanted to play video games with an arcade stick and buttons, but got sticker shock after seeing the price of commercially available controllers that connect to a computer via USB. He set out to build his own and ended up with the controller-in-a box that you see above.
At first he tried using an mbed microcontroller board but was unhappy with the latency built into the system that detected a button press, sent it via USB as a keyboard press, which was then interpreted as input by the game. He ditched the microcontroller completely and picked up a couple of 4021 parallel-to-serial shift registers. He had previously used this method to make his own SNES controller. The SNES uses two 8-bit shift registers to generate an 16-bit serial packet to send to the console. [Alex's] reused that system, adding an SNES controller plug to his arcade box, and using the SNES to USB converter he already had to connect to the computer. Now he’s got a portable controller for the cost of three buttons, the stick, and two IC’s.

[Adam] from Teague Labs wrote in to share a new gadget they built to help demonstrate the capabilities of the Teagueduino. Their table top video game in a box was made with a bunch of electronic components they had sitting around, as well as soda straws, plenty of painter’s tape, and some popscicle sticks.
When someone pulls the string on the front of the box, a servo opens it automatically, and a second servo starts spinning the game reel. As the reel moves, the player is presented with a set of obstacles to dodge, guiding the “hero” via a knob-controlled servo. A hall sensor attached to the back of the character is tripped when passing over any of the obstacles, which are attached to the reel with magnetic tape. When the hero collides with an obstacle, the game ends and proceeds to close itself, much to the chagrin of the player.
As you can see in the video below, it’s a pretty entertaining and challenging game.
Looking to make one of your own? Swing by the Teagueduino site to grab the game’s code and be sure to share your creations with us in the comments.

[MyMagicPudding] wanted to try his hand at hobby electronics, so he decided to go all-in and build himself a PIP-Boy 3000. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, the PIP-Boy 3000 is a wrist-mounted computer from the popular Fallout video game series.
The PIP-Boy is based around an HTC Desire HD mobile phone, which [MyMagicPudding] mounted inside case custom made for him by [Skruffy] from the Replica Prop Forum. He wanted to stay true to the game, so the wrist-mounted computer’s interface eschew’s the Desire’s touch screen and is instead controlled via a set of buttons and dials on its face. The external inputs all interface with the Desire via an Arduino Uno, which communicates with the phone using TCP over USB.
While he admits that his soldering skills are pretty dodgy, and that there’s no longer room behind the neat-looking facade to mount the PIP-Boy on his wrist, we think that it looks great. If this is an example of his first electronics project, we can’t wait to see what comes next.
Continue reading to see the PIP-Boy 3000 in action.

After the hacking of DCEmu earlier in the year many of our websites were lost and then merged into one website, this meant a lot of homebrew releases were lost in the wilderness. One of DCEmu`s favourite coders over the years was and still is Deniska who is famous for so many releases for the PSP Homebrew scene, many that gave some of the very biggest homebrew releases over the years for the PSP.
Let me remind you of his releases:
Deniska whos site is now back to life was the coder behind Map This which was a map software for the PSP which actually sold thousands worldwide and gave the GPS adapter for the PSP a reason for owning it. Deniska was also responsible for ports of opensource games such as Rise of The Triad, Bermuda Syndrome, Biniax 2, Circus Linux!, Dave Gnukem PSP, Defendguin, Dodgin' Diamond II,Hex-A-Hop, Jazz JackRabbit, Kill Everything That Moves, Metal Blob Solid, Nicky Boom, Nicky II, Nikwi Deluxe, Noiz2sa, Project Starfighter ,Reverzi PSP, Supertux, Toppler, Tyrian. Relive the best days of the PSP Homebrew scene once more.

via http://retroactionmagazine.com/retro...n-zx-spectrum/
Inspired by a recent forum thread on the World of Spectrum website, The Mojon Twins rapidly set to work on bringing Horace back to his native ZX Spectrum. Mention must go to ‘ewgf’ in the WOS forums whose quick write up provided the back-story to the game. The plot follows Horace when he is drunk and down on his luck. Missing the good old days when he appeared on the ZX Spectrum and was famous, Horace decided to star in some Commodore 64 games – how could he even think of such a thing? It didn’t go well and he soon pined for his beloved black 8-bit micro.
So what we have here is old school platform gaming where Horace explores the many screens to find and destroy those Commodore 64 cassette tapes that contain his most embarrassing moments. The game’s full story, gameplay, controls and downloads can be found on the Horace webpage at The Mojon Twins’ website.

Landmark titles DOOM and DOOM 2 received a USK 16+ rating in Germany today. Both titles were previously indexed by the Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons (BPjM), which placed the games in the same commercially restrictive category as porn.
"We are obviously very pleased with their decision," Bethesda Softworks VP of PR and Marketing Pete Hines told us this morning. "Can't give you details yet on when they will be available in Germany. We'll let everyone know as soon as we know."
Hines explained that an appeal of the indexing is allowed after 10 years, with DOOMand DOOM 2 having been released in 1993 and 1994, respectively. Publisher Bethesda Softworks, whose parent company acquired original developer id Software in 2009, figured it would take the shot.
This is the latest classification surprise from Germany, which recently rated Gears of War 3, after both the previous installments were indexed. Microsoft is currentlylooking into getting the first two games available in the country.

August 31st, 2011, 22:54 Posted By: wraggster
The curators of a proposed Videogame History Museum in Sunnyvale, California, have successfully raised sufficient funds to get the project off the ground through crowdfunding website Kickstarter.
Joe Santulli, Sean Kelly and John Hardie launched their Kickstarter project last month, and sought to raise $30,000 by September 1. With two weeks to go the project had raised barely half of its target, but a flurry of interest meant the goal was reached with almost a week to spare. At the time of writing, the project has raised $35,490, with 27 hours left on the clock.
"When I woke up this morning and saw that we had met our goal, my eyes literally welled up with tears and a chill rolled down my spine," Santulli wrote on Kickstarter on behalf of the team. He was one of the organisers of the first Classic Gaming Expo in 1998, and has been involved ever since, also taking the collection to shows like E3 at his own expense.
"What drives us to do [the Classic Gaming Expo] each year is pure and simple passion," Santulli writes. "The Videogame History Museum is fuelled by that same passion. It's truly heartwarming to see that so many of you not only share that passion with us, but that you see it burning strongly enough in us that even in these tough economic times, you've pledged your hard-earned money to help launch the Videogame History Museum.
Santulli, Kelly and Hardie have, over the years, collected some 30,000 pieces of videogaming history. The funds raised so far will go towards a Silicon Valley base of operations, and a mobile exhibit that will see them continue to attend trade shows to raise awareness and, hopefully, enough funds for a public museum.
In other words, while this goal has been passed, much remains to be done. "Kickstarter is just the beginning," Santulli writes. "A project like The Computer History Museum takes in and spends tens of millions per year. We're many, many years away from being in the same league as they are, but something of that scale is our ultimate goal and it will cost a lot to get there."
Despite the target being reached, Santulli asks that those interested in showing their support continue to make pledges to offset the deductions that will be made by Kickstarter and payment handler Amazon. For more, follow the source link below.

4DO / FourDO is an open source frontend for the 3DO emulator FreeDO.

4DO 1.0.5.1 Alpha Released!
Posted on August 29, 2011 by Johnny
Key Features:
Multiple player support
I certainly didn’t think I’d be able to get this feature up and running as quickly as I did! I left the interface a tad lacking, but oh well. Let me know if you experience issues with this. I tested it out as best as my brain could handle flubbing around with several controllers at once.
By the way, the controllers are set to be always active, meaning the 3DO system will think they’re always plugged in. I think this is a safe assumption, but let me know if any games complain or fail as a result.
Also, 4DO currently supports only 6 players; I tested these using Fifa soccer. I’m pretty sure there’s at least one game with support for 8 players, but I’m considering that a pretty low priority (and I’m not sure how the game managed to fit those last two controllers into the number of bytes I believe are available). Besides, I doubt that there are 8 rabid 3DO fans living in close proximity just waiting to test it out. Obviously, 6 people is downright feasible.

via http://gbatemp.net/t306974-epic-adventure-v1-5
This Atari 2600 adventure game features 32 rooms and a golden chalice. The goal of the game is to retrieve the chalice after killing the dragon. Sounds sort of like "Adventure" -- but this game is all new and not a hack. Be sure to give this game a try on Alekmaul's StellaDS Homebrew Bounty entry!
QUOTE(Change Log)
•Added level III with randomized items.
•Level I is easier – two stabs to kill dragon, one to kill troll. No hawk or wizard (so my kids can beat the game!).
•Different title screen – I think the Evil Magician’s castle & gate looks cooler…
•Orc disappears after you kill the wizard, so you’re free to explore.
•Should work on Harmony cart now (untested).
