I managed to rustle up another dose of Back in Time at Out-of-Print Archive. This is our monthly feature where we go back twenty years this month and take a look at the videogaming magazines. Everyone will know that Computer & Video Games was the world’s first magazine dedicated to videogaming, and in November 1991, they celebrated their tenth anniversary. Elsewhere, there were two newly launched magazines, along with a new publishing company, to cover to ever popular consoles. Games wise, it was arcade hits all round as Mega Twins and Turtles The Coin-Op made their transition from arcade to home machines.
The Back in Tine: November 1991 feature is accompanied by four handpicked online articles taken from the mentioned magazines: The aforementioned ‘We Are 10′ feature from C&VG issue 120, Mega Twins review from Amiga Action issue 26, Turtles The Coin-Op review from Commodore Format issue 14 and the, not previously mentioned, Xenon II review from Game Zone issue 1. The Back in Time: November 1991 feature can be found at Out-of-Print Archive.

Alrighty, this is an old project I did back in 2002. I have almost redone everything since the previous version listed Adventures of Arle by PokeUSA. At the moment I am still working on much of the dialogue since the last version was all over the show. The dialogue now is 100% more accurate.
What’s changed?- New font inserted giving it a more original look than the Pokemon one I put in originally.
- Complete re-translation of all names, spells, items, menus and dialogues.
- Menu’s have been re-sized to look cleaner and translate more accurately.
- Removed the capitalization of spells, names and nouns.
- Almost all battle dialogue is translated to read in full.
Things to know!
Some spell names and Monster names have currently been shortened due to many of the literal translations and there are no English names for them i.e. Knight Puppet is now Knitepet (same thing just shortened to more of a name). Not a big deal.
Will have a release as soon as I complete all status information, new title screen to the crap one I made 9 years ago and also at least up to the first battle of dialogue translated.
P.S. If you are extremely familiar with this game then please email me.

Developer Gearbox has accused game reviewers of unfairly marking down Duke Nukem Forever, which was finally released in June after over a decade in development.
The game carries a very low 49 per cent average on aggregation site Metacritic (on Xbox 360) and was widely derided for its poor execution, dated gameplay and lack of shooting action.
"We wish the reviews were a little less caustic,” Gearbox co-founder Brian Martel told Eurogamer. “We're not quite sure where some of the anger came from.
"There were things towards the high and things towards the low, but the middle just didn't get any traction. It's pretty obvious that people were using it in some ways to kind of use it as a soapbox or whatever."
Martel added that the style of the game was one that "a certain amount of gamers today are not used to", saying: "It was what it was meant to be, which is a more old-school style game in what is today's technology.”
Prior to the game’s release Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford was so bold as to compare the game to Half-Life 2, saying: "We know the game's great. Any journalist that decides to try to go to lowball it is gonna be held accountable by the readers. The last time I had a really solid experience like this was Half-Life 2."
And despite the beating DNF has received since its release, it’s an argument that Martel was happy to continue.
"Would Half-Life today be reviewed as highly as it is, you know, even today?” he insisted. “As a new IP coming out with the same sort of mechanics Half-Life had.
"I think we all have a nostalgia and love for that particular brand. Obviously Gearbox got its start working on Opposing Force so we love Half-Life. But is the current gamer, would they have the same love for that? It'd be interesting. I think the same kind of thing happened with Duke."

We've loved Commodore USA'sC64 computer recreations ever since it began producing them back in 2010. Much to our delight, the company recently outed its third variant, the C64x Extreme. This unit features the '80s flair we've come to appreciate, but supercharged to 2011 spec. Crammed inside its case is a 2.2GHz Intel core i7 quad-core CPU (capable of turbo boosting to 3.3GHz), 8GB of DDR3 RAM, Intel HD integrated graphics and a spacious 2TB HDD. Externally, you'll find a duo of USB 3.0 ports, a triplet of USB 2.0 ports and an eSATA connection, along with HDMI, 3.5mm S/PDIF, VGA and DVI ports for A/V hookups. Best of all, it's loaded with Bluetooth, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, an Ethernet port and even a DVD-RW drive on its side. The C64X-Ex will initially come loaded with Linux Mint 11, and it'll fully support Windows once the company's "retro inspired" Commodore OS Vision becomes available. Of course, the C64x-Ex's blend of vintage looks and modern-day power will cost ya -- to a tune of $1,500. If that's cool by your books, Commodore USA plans to ship orders placed by November 25th before December 15th. Full press release after the break.

When the granddaddy of FPS' tweets, we listen. For those unaware, that's John Carmack -- you know, the guy behind games like Doom, Quake and Rage -- confirming that Doom 3's engine, id Tech 4, is all bundled up for its open-source release, only awaiting clearance from legal. To be verbose, that doesn't mean you'll be getting down with a gratis copy of Doom, but rather with the powerhouse that powers it, a veritable boon to game developers and tinkerers, alike. The release is par for the course for the company, as id Software's been routinely open-sourcing its older engines for as long as we can remember. We'll keep an eye out for when it drops, but while you wait, feel free to read an interview with the visionary himself.

I know i havent been here for awhile and as you all know i have a job aswell but on my spare time i also work on videos that take a bit of time to work on. Everything is created by me title screen, music, narration etc the only thing not created by me is the games which are made by amazing companies. What my show is about is sharing my past and talking about the history of the games I enjoyed so much through my childhood. I believe this gives you the viewer some memories aswell and will also help new gamers understand where gaming started from and will help you purchase some great games from the past. I at the moment have 5 video's up and running and i hope to continue more with the help of you the viewer. If i get more views it gets me more excited in doing more videos which will of course get you more excited on the next episode. So please enjoy the episodes currently available at http://www.youtube.com/dceric and let me know in comments what you think.

It’s fair to say that following the departure of the legendary Julian Rignall in the early 1990s, the world’s first dedicated videogaming magazine, Computer & Video Games, suffered badly. Despite the efforts of some well known editors and journalists, the magazine lost favour amongst its fans and they, like Rignall, departed for pastures new.
Step in Paul Davies, who, within a few short months, was able to gather a small team of gaming enthusiasts – who were also handy with the journalistic word or two – and revive the UK’s former leading multi-format videogaming magazine. This issue 174 from May 1996 is that team’s great re-launch and was the start of the magazine’s fantastic revival.
Besides a change in editorial, the design had changed drastically. Gone were the percentage ratings, which were the mainstay of many a magazine, and in were the “High Five” five star style scoring. There was also a superb Freeplay pullout section which contained news, charts, player guides, tips, and the superb Retro Computer Cabin. In fact, the magazine was filled page to page with enthusiastic writing throughout and the rising circulation figures reflected this. Now, retrogamers the world over can relive that landmark issue thanks to Out-of-Print Archive and meppi who meticulously scanned, edited and digitally restored the issue to its former glory.
The CVG issue 174 catalogue page includes editorial info, content list of the issue, as well as four accompanying online articles including a feature on the ACME 96 Show, review of Panzer Dragoon Zwei II (Saturn), review of Terra Nova (PC) and a preview of Sonic the Fighters (Arcade). And, of course, links to download the magazine itself in both iDevice or Full resolution edition.

Retrocade Magazine has just premiered its first issue. With an emphasis on arcade gaming, the retrogaming ezine is available to purchase in PDF digital format for $4.99. I know what you’re thinking – well, we certainly were: “$4.99? This better be the best darned digital magazine ever.” And on first impressions – nice cover and great contents list – that was the case.
Content wise, you can expect to see an article on the cover subject with Computer Space: Coin-Op Finally Begins, while elsewhere, there is Event Coverage of recent, er, events, The King Of 3 – Meet George Riley, High Scores Arcade, Console War: Atari 2600 vs. Mattel Intellivision, Mario Bros. : How the Console Ports Stack Up, reviews of recent arcade ports such as Moon Cresta 7800 and Vector Pilot, and much more.
So we come back to the “better be the best darned digital magazine ever,” and we are left slightly disappointed. Yes, the content and writing is good, but the design and layout of the ezine is lacking. We don’t know about the thoughts of the majority of retrogamers out there, but when we have to pay for an ezine, we expect better production values than this – there are better designed ezines out there that don’t cost a penny. But we digress…
If you have a bit of spare cash, can put up with the minor irritation of going through the rigmarole of processing the order, navigate through a rather poorly designed ezine, then Retrocade Magazine is a pretty good read. Retrocade Magazine Vol 1 Issue 1 is available to purchase from the Stone Age Gamer website.

The Mojon Twins have been hard at work updating their La Churrera game engine for the ZX Spectrum with the release of v3.99. Not only that but they have spent two whole afternoons developing a new game to showcase this new engine.
Trabajo Basura, which we are assured, translates as Dire Job, is a classic platform romp that all Mojon Twins fans will be familiar with. Amador is a frustrated programmer who is disillusioned with his job and felt let down by his boss. Amador plans to get revenge by collecting evidence that would spell the end of his boss’ career.
The game’s ZX Spectrum tape image download, instructions, screenshots and more can be found on The Mojon Twins’ website.

We’ve mentioned the Commodore 64 retrogaming ezine, Komoda, before, but we must emphasize our delight when we see a new issue released, what with its classic retro graphics style design and content to match. It really is a must read. OK, it’s in Polish, but Google Translator (or a similar package) can be your best friend at times like these.
Within the digital pages of issue 5, you will find regular columns, reviews (Titanic Blinky, Silkworm, New Zeland Story, Nebulus…), articles (Silesia Party 2011, Demo Express, Survival Horror…), interviews (Rafal Neck, from Silesia Party…), news and more.
Komoda issue 5 and its accompanying cover disk of mini games can be found on the C&A Fan website.

The Ghostbusters II game we got in America, developed by Kemco and published by Activision, was poop. Meanwhile, Japan and Europe got a completely different Ghostbusters II game called New Ghostbusters II by talented developer HAL Laboratory -- creators of Kirby and Lolo, and employer of future Nintendo president Satoru Iwata. It was much less poop-like.
New Ghostbusters II never came out in North America, likely because Activision had already secured the rights for a game based on the movie. Nintendo Player discovered (and dumped) a prototype of an unreleased US version of HAL'sGhostbusters II game, and documented the minimal differences between that version and the ones released elsewhere.
Apparently, HAL did have plans to release this at some point! And then, for some reason, potentially because of interference from Activision or Vigo the Carpathian, it instead became the footnote it is now.
