In 1990, a development studio called Toys for Bob created a game called Star Control, a fun little space combat game with a bit of strategy added in. In 1992, they released Star Control 2, a full-blown space adventure RPG, which became one of the seminal works of early PC gaming. (Later open-sourced and released for modern systems.) After that, creators Fred Ford and Paul Reiche III lost control of the franchise to Accolade, who botched Star Control 3 and eventually abandoned the series. Last July, Stardock, the studio behind Sins of a Solar Empire, acquired the rights, and they're now discussing their plans to resurrect the classic series. They'll be using Star Control 2 as a template and an inspiration for all aspects of the game, though they won't be using any of the IP from Star Control I & II. They've also contacted Ford and Reiche and will try to hold true to their creative intentions. (The two currently run an Activision game studio, so they won't be involved with the new game.) Production will begin this winter.

Elite Systems has launched a Kickstarter campaign for a hardware homage to the Sinclair ZX Spectrum.
The re-launch will actually be a Bluetooth keyboard, initially for iOS, in the form-factor of a 48k Sinclair ZX Spectrum.£60,000 is being sought.
“When used in conjunction with the simultaneously released and separately sold Bluetooth ZX Spectrum apps the Bluetooth ZX Spectrum will provide authentic rubber-key play-control over a comprehensive catalogue of 100 per cent original, officially licenced, paid-for Bluetooth ZX Spectrum games via a secure App Store environment,” said Elite.

Wilfred Bos has released SID Known v1.07. This version supports now HVSC #60.

specific C64 demo or C64 game, or you have a SID tune found or ripped and you
want to know if it is already in your SID collection.
SID Known can be used to identify music but it also helps to find out which
tunes are not in the High Voltage SID Collection. If you find music not found
by SID Known, it would be appreciated if you report this to the HVSC crew
(http://hvsc.de) or post it in one of the CSDb forums (http://csdb.dk) like
"SIDs that aren´t in HVSC yet".

Guerrilla War developer KNT’s initials are spelled out as hidden power-ups that would kill all enemies onscreen, give the player 1,000 points and grant a weapon.
Spare a thought for those who shut down 1988 Famicom game Erika To Satoru No Yume Bouken (Erika And Satoru’s Dream Adventure) when it ended. They never knew how close they were. All they needed to do was sit on the screen that read ‘End’ for 18 minutes until its image of the game’s characters turned black-and-white. From there, just another 18 minutes would see the picture turn sepia. The game’s music would still be playing at this point, but would stop after a further 55 minutes, signalling to absolutely no one that the music from The Karate Kid, by famed composer Hirohiko Takayama, could now be played. How? Press A+B+Start+Select+Left on controller 1, and A+B+Right on controller 2.
The player who got this far would have intuited that nowhere in The Karate Kid’s music was a prompt to press B+Select+Right on controller 1, and B+Right+Down on controller 2. If they did that anyway, now an hour and a half into this insane process, it would play a message from programmer ‘Hidemushi’, from which we’ve had to remove names for legal reasons.“Mmm, that’s a nostalgic song playing. Those were good times,” it begins. “Meanwhile, who the hell are these people with this project? I’m so glad it’s over. You think it’s nothing but good memories? Hell no! Let’s use this space to give out some thanks.“First off, [person A], who ran off with some guy in the middle of the project. Yes, you, you bastard. Don’t show up at the office without showering after having sex six times the previous night. Next, [person B]. Yes, you, you bastard. Don’t give me your flippant shit – coming in late on the day we ship the ROM like nothing’s amiss. You can give me all the porn you want, I’m not forgetting that one. All that ****ing weight you put on. No wonder you paid out 18,000 yen and still got nothing but a kiss out of it.”On it goes, naming further ‘bastards’ and threatening to send one back to the Edo period. More button presses reveal a heartfelt apology to Hidemushi’s family, and 18 minutes later the game ends again, this time for real.Erika To Satoru No Yume Bouken is a game about an everyday brother and sister searching for a magical crown on behalf of something that looks like a cat. It’s probably the last place you’d expect to see a developer go completely postal on his colleagues. Spend enough time on The Cutting Room Floor website, however, and you soon learn to expect anything. With 3,712 articles at the time of writing, The Cutting Room Floor (TCRF) is “a site dedicated to unearthing and researching unused and cut content from videogames”. It’s not the only one, but it’s the biggest and most organised, and at the heart of a very real phenomenon you could call videogame archaeology.

Where the bloody hell is Doom 4? It makes me so sad that my beloved id Software can't get its s*** together on Doom 4, or so it seems at least. This should be one of the easiest sells in the world. Bright, colourful hellscapes, superfast movement and fantastical projectile weaponry, labyrinthine levels with keys and secret rooms - the antithesis to all the grit and grime of contemporary first-person shooters.Ah well. At least we still have the original Doom, and what a game it was. We got an email from Game Art HQ earlier today reminding us that it's been 20 years to the day since the release of the original Doom and browsing through the site's amazing collection of fan arthit our nostalgia nerves hard. With that in mind, we thought: what better way to celebrate the old devil's anniversary than by firing it up for one more dark December evening? We're using the Xbox Live Arcade version, which Ian will be streaming live from 5pm GMT. Join him and knock back a few Cacodemons, and in the meantime why not share some of your Doom memories in the comments.

Free extract from Sensible Software: 1986 – 1999, the UK development legend's new biography
Following a successful Kickstarter project last year, new book publisher Read Only Memory has released its first title, Sensible Software: 1986 – 1999.
This biography chronicles the history of one of the UK's most iconic development studios, as well as the origins of smash hits such as Sensible Soccer and Cannon Fodder – and we've got a free taster for you right here.
In the extract below, the book's author and former games journalist Gary Penn speaks to Sensible Software co-founder Jon Hare about some of the crucial decisions behind creating Cannon Fodder.
Sensible Software: 1986 – 1999 is available now from Read Only Memory's official website. It costs £25, plus postage and packaging for non-UK customers.

Technology Will Save Us is a company that makes kits and runs classes to turn consumers into craftsmen. It can help you make a tiny synth, a pair of programmable LED glasses, and now a console.“We tried to go back to the archetype of a gaming device,” says product designer and ‘creative technologist’ Michail Vanis. “The screen only has 64 pixels and no colours; the buttons are just the classic up, down, left, right and start; and the sound is a monotone speaker. We were really inspired by those keyring-sized Game & Watches Nintendo used to make, because [they] stripped everything complicated for a really simple gaming experience.”The DIY Gamer unit is a handheld stripped to its barest essentials and sold as a construction kit. The point is to illustrate the workings behind things that users take for granted.
