The Neo Geo X handheld has suffered a slight delay in Europe, although apparently the US launch stock has sold out.
The machine was supposed to launch in Europe earlier this month but despite going on sale in the US there’s no sign of the unit in the UK.
"Blaze and all our European distributors are collecting our stock this weekend from Asia and shipping it over Christmas to all our customers," a Blaze spokesperson toldEurogamer.
"In the UK, Funstock are our exclusive retailer for the Christmas season and they wrote to everyone to tell them 10 days ago when they would be getting theirs, so everyone who has placed an order is 100 per cent in the loop.
"I have received feedback today that all our distributors in Europe have now pre-sold all their stock. We have kept a quantity back for the New Year, but expect, ourselves, to be totally sold out early January."
Blaze also claims that the US launch has been a big success.
"US distributor Tommo released the first of their stock in the US version the day before yesterday,” he added. “They have totally sold out and this has been a great boost for us in Europe as it has reviewed very well and our web sales went absolutely crazy yesterday. I have not seen anything like it before."

This heavily populated PCB is a recreation of the original arcade version of Pong. That is an important distinction because the home version of Pong used a specialized chip to do much of the work. This is basically all stock logic, which explains the high component count. We wonder how many quarters it took just to pay for all 66 chips at the time?
[Pong74ls] was the person who took on this project. There is an original schematic available, but it’s incredibly crowded and rather difficult to figure out. Fortunately [Dan Boris] has already done a lot of the heavy work. He took the one-page nightmare and turned it intoa sixteen page plan for building the original board (look for the schematic link under technical details).
Before the board could be laid out some redesign work was necessary. It sounds like some of the original chips are out of production and suitable replacements needed to be found. The board was then laid out in Eagle before sending the design off to a fab house. There was just one error which didn’t allow the ball to bounce when hitting a paddle while travelling downward. A couple of jumper wires fixed that right up!

For playing around with video signals and trying to create a an interesting microcontroller project, you can’t do better than the classic Pong. We’ve seen our share of microcontroller-based pong builds, but rarely have we seen an 8-pin microcontroller recreate every part of the first video game.
[Tim] started his PIC12F1840-based Pong build with just a few buttons for controls and a video output. This in itself is somewhat of an achievement, as [Tim] used all the data memory and every GPIO pin on this small microcontroller.
He had time to optimize his build and ended up adding the bleeps and bloops of the original Pong to his build. He’s got an interesting design on his hands, and also what is probably the smallest Pong clone in existence.

An innovative reinvention of cult platform the Neo Geo is now on sale.
The Neo Geo X Gold Limited Edition is available from Blaze for £175 in the UK. It costs $199 in the US, although some retailers – notably Amazon – are selling it for as much as $245.
For your money you get a handheld games console packaged in a Neo Geo console style housing that also acts as a charging station. It also has composite and HDMI outputs so it can hooked up to a TV or monitor and a Neo Geo X Arcade Stick.
20 AES games come pre-loaded on the system.
Potential buyers will be hoping that the device enjoys a smoother ride than Blaze’s last handheld, the GameGadget, which shipped with crippling functionality flaws, attracted virtually no support for its content store and was eventually discounted to just £40.

Ben clearly has way too much spare time on his hands, but he decided to see just how well an antiquated ZX Spectrum would hold up to modern EMC requirements. His blog is a good read if you're looking for something to do while pretending to work! From the blog: 'This year is the 30th anniversary of one of my favourite inventions of all time, the Sinclair ZX Spectrum. A few weeks ago, I finally bought one: a non-working one on eBay that I nursed back to health. Fortunately there was very little wrong with it. Unfortunately it's a 16K model, and a fairly early one at that, which won't run much software in its native state. This probably accounts for its unusually pristine condition. We took half an hour in the chamber to perform an approximate series of EN55022 measurements, to check its radiated emissions against today's standard. The question is, what have we learned as an industry since 1982?

Quake 2 taught me to mouse-look and strafe, showed me how 3D graphics cards (Voodoo2) could pimp a picture and made me understand "FOV" and "gg" and "wp".Quake 2 showed me rocket jumps and the pleasure of nailing a moving target half-a-map away with a railgun blast.Quake 2 opened my eyes to competitive online multiplayer.Yesterday Quake 2 turned 15 years old.To mark the occasion, id Software's Tim Willits shared a few facts about the game.Only three artists made all the 2D and 3D art for the game, apparently, although most of those player models and textures were rapidly expanded on by the community.A creamy orangey masterpiece.
Quake 2 could have been called WOR, but ultimately id Software thought the fast-paced action better suited the Quake label.The Edge (Q2DM1) - Tim Willits' and many others' favourite deathmatch level - has over 50 trick jumps possible on it. Willits apparently only designed two of them, the rest were discovered by the community.How many can you remember? I think I can remember the jump by the water that hid the railgun; if you stood by the spawn point, ran at an angle and then jumped off a contour you could spring yourself up onto a ledge where there was some extra ammo and, err, health perhaps. Risky though, what with the snipery rocket launcher ledge nearby.There was another clever jump off the stairs in the main room up to the top of a large crate. From there you could strafe jump to the top of the other two boxes and net yourself the mega health. I think you could also achieve this by jumping up into the corner of the little box by the two bigger boxes.I recall another jump near the bottom of the lift off of the ramp that neatly landed you on the upper platform without needing to run round.

This video game gives your thumbs a rest while stretching those vocal chords. The pair ofmicrophones seen above control the video game on the LCD display. Saying “Biu” will launch a projectile while “ahh” adjusts the flight path. The system was developed by [Tian Gao] as a final project for his ECE 4760 course at Cornell University.
The inputs are common computer microphones connected to some processing circuitry which he built on a piece of protoboard. This consists of some RC filtering and an LM358 opamp to get the signal ready for use with the ATmega1284. There is only one ADC on that chip so [Tian] alternates sampling from the microphones by using the multiplexer built into the chip. The video signal itself is an NTSC composite signal. To facilitate a reasonable frame rate he uses graphics that are packed in multiples of 8-bits. All in all this allows him to create a 160×200 pixel display.
All of this makes the game sound a little dry, but we dare you to listen to the video clip after the break without cracking a smile.

The '90s were a golden age for cheapskate gaming: with the popularity of shareware - a distribution model that offered hours of free play to PC owners - there was never a lack of something new to try.
Anyone who owned a PC in the '90s will be intimately familiar with many of the titles on offer at RGB Classic Games, a site that provides over 300 DOS titles free-to-play in a web browser. Everything from the first shareware episode of Doom through to Cliff Bleszinski'sJazz Jack Rabbit is here. It's enough to make you wanna cry.Other highlights include John Romero's first game Dangerous Dave, early id Software classic Commander Keen, the first Duke Nukemplatformer, as well as lesser known titles such as The Lost Vikings and Loader Larry. Strangely, not all the titles on offer were first distributed as shareware, though RGB insists that "all of the games on this site are freely distributable because they are shareware, freeware, or because the copyright holder has officially and legally released all rights to the public domain (abandonware)."
Whatever the case, there's weeks - nay years - worth of play here. Got any fond memories of '90s gaming?

A leaked memo from Mitsubishi has revealed that the Japanese company plans to ditch its line of rear-projection TV – the last manufacturer to do so.
According to CE Pro, a memo from Mitsubishi CEO Junichi Nose was issued to authorised service centres announcing that the company would be ‘discontinuing the manufacture of 73-inch, 82-inch and 92-inch DLP projection televisions’.
The move is apparently part of a wider plan to change Mitsubishi’s business direction that will see it focusing more on the B2B market, producing items like projectors, display walls, printers, digital signage and monitors, as well as targeting the home theatre projector market.
Mitsubishi is the last of the major manufacturers to abandon the rear-projection format, which has been commercially available since the 1970s. Sony abandoned the market in 2007, while Samsung ditched the format in 2008.
While it’s possible that other smaller manufacturers may continue to make rear-projection TV’s for use in developing markets, it’s unlikely that we’ll see new models made for western distribution.

Don't think the festivities surrounding Pong's 40th are limited to official channels. Sander Veerhof of the Netherlands is marking the occasion in his own way with an augmented reality version built as a Layar plugin. Instead of batting the ball across a TV screen, players play across whole continents: anyone who's been online recently is fair game as a fresh target, and the camera's field of view gives a sense of where opponents reside in real life. Games won't be nearly as fast-paced as you might remember from that classic system from the arcade or living room. However, they'll still be reminders that people worldwide have a soft spot for the Nolan Bushnell title that arguably started the video game industry -- and global Pong sure beats a game of global thermonuclear war.

While we wait for Fire Emblem: Awakening to be released in English, another previously Japanese-only Fire Emblem is finally available in English, thanks to the dedication of the “Heroes of Shadow” translation group!
Fire Emblem: Heroes of Light and Shadow is a remake of the second part of Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem and the sequel to Shadow Dragon. It charts Marth’s greatest journey from a new light–or in this case, shadow.
For the first time in the series, you can create your own playable character, an Avatar, who fights alongside Marth and supports him from the shadows of history. How will your adventure with Marth and his companions develop?
The current translation patch, v3.00, translates the game in its entirety.

n the C64 demoscene there are a ton of awesome software hacks that push the Commodore 64, the 1MHz 6510-based computer from 1982, to its limits. Most of these C64 demos are very much limited by the hardware inside the C64, but the demoscene is always coming up with new ways of pushing the envelope. [No Quarter] just sent in one of these software hacks that propel the capabilities of the C64 into the realm of absurdity by .
Playing a song on the C64 begins with an Amiga and a Perfect Sound digitizer to convert the digital audio file into a 4-bit sample. Once this sample is transferred over to the C64 where it was manually timed so streaming it off a 1581 disk drive would result in the song playing at the correct pitch. It’s an amazing work of optimization; the audio data is streamed off the disk just as fast as it’s played from memory, an amazing data throughput rate for the ‘ol C64
After the break you can see [No Quarter] playing Led Zeppelin, Bon Jovi, Shania Twain, and Extreme. A very, very cool project and with the addition of a C64 hard drive makes it possible to have a media player for the C64.

[Zachariah Perry] builds a lot of replica props, and judging from the first few offerings on his blog he’s quite good at it. We enjoyed looking in on the Captain America shield and Zelda treasure chest (complete with music, lights, and floating heart container). But his most recent offering is the wearable and (kind of) working Pipboy 3000 from the Fallout series.
From his description in the video after the break it sounds like the case itself came as a promotional item that was part of a special edition of the game. He’s done a lot to make it functional though. The first thing to notice is the screen. It’s domed like the surface of a CRT, but there’s obviously not enough room for that kind of thing. The dome is made from the lens taken out of a slide viewer. It sits atop the screen of a digital picture frame. [Zachariah] loaded still images from the game into the frame’s memory, routing its buttons to those on the Pipboy. He also added a 12 position rotary switch which toggles between the lights at the bottom of the screen.
A little over a year ago we saw a more or less fully functional Pipboy. But that included so many added parts it was no longer wearable.

[Armin] recently pulled out his Commodore 64 and looked back on the projects he did as a kid. The surprising thing is that we’re not talking quite as far in the past as you might image. He was 13 in 2002 and the family didn’t have a PC. But more than a decade before his father had purchased a C64 and [Armin] dug into the manual to teach himself how to code. This week he connected the old hardware to his video capture card to give us a demonstration on what he accomplished.
He had seen Windows 95 at the local computer club and figured why not program a clone of the software for the machine at hand? He called it Windows 105 (because that number is higher than 95) and worked out ways to mimic programs like DOS, Corel Draw, Notepad, and some of the programs from Microsoft Office. They didn’t include all the functionality of the real thing, but the look was there.
The story does have a happy ending. [Armin's] parents saw what he was doing and managed to pick up a PC for him to play with. Now he’s a professional programmer looking back on the formative years that got him there. We’ve embedded one of his demo videos after the break for your enjoyment.
