Download service Steam started hosting software as well as games as of September 5th. It’s by no means the first nor the last company to offer a range of downloadable software but Valve’s current strength in the games market means software developers and retailers alike will be watching with interest to see how this works out.
It’s part of a trend that points to a move away from boxed software at retail, to a download-only era that’s getting closer at high speed.
A statement on the Steam website read: “The software titles coming to Steam range from creativity to productivity. Many of the launch titles will take advantage of popular Steamworks features, such as easy installation, automatic updating, and the ability to save your work to your personal Steam Cloud space.”
There had been hints for some time that Valve might make a move in this direction. A recent update to Steam’s Android App revealed a range of new software categories, and founder Gabe Newell has mentioned discussions with Adobe in recent months.
DIGITAL DOMINATION
Valve’s not the only firm planning big things for digital software. EA, which has its own Origin streaming service (solely for games at this point), also thinks we are on our way to digital domination.
EA COO Peter Moore told Reuters that: “There will come a point, when we say ‘We are doing more in digital media now than we are in physical media’ and it’s not far away.”
So what does it all mean for those retailers and developers who still care about boxed software? Are there still opportunities out there?
Software publisher Serif, which says it already works with a number of digital distribution partners including Intel, Amazon and Valve, thinks a decline at retail is inevitable.
Sales and marketing director Ashley Hewson comments: “Sales of software in bricks and mortar retail is already in fairly rapid decline. This is primarily driven by more consumers preferring to download software, which in turn is accelerated by retailers dedicating less of their shelf space to software products.
“There is some opportunity here if you can keep your products on the shelf while your competitors lose their slots, but even that only presents a short term win. In the long term, I would expect most opportunities for in-store purchases of software to come from cross-sells made at the point of purchase of a hardware item.”
Jon Atherton, VP for distributor Entatech, points out that though there is a decline, there are still benefits in selling software for indies: “The software market is becoming increasingly focused on downloads, moving away from the more traditional boxed products. Whilst Entatech can accommodate and support this shift in supply, we still cater for the traditional boxed market – in our experience our smaller independent retailers still prefer to have a tangible product as they find this aids their sales.”
Publisher Focus Multimedia is more positive – having had recent experience of selling Angry Birds on PC at retail, despite it already being available for free online, and it continues to sell a range of software solutions at retail outlets too. The firm’s Alan Wild says: “There are still great opportunities at retail. People want to be entertained and are prepared to spend.”
WORKING SIDE BY SIDE
Distributor and service provider Gem agrees that the market still has some life in it. Head of marketing Katie Rawlings says: “The industry is still redefining itself. Just look at the growth within the mobile and browser areas; these are very recent developments in the last few years. While some cannibalisation is to be expected, boxed and digital will most likely work together side by side for many years to come.”
Gem is also in the interesting position of having acquired a digital distribution arm earlier in the year. Talking about Ztorm, Rawlings tells PCR: “Developing our offering together with Ztorm for both online and in-store activities where we can offer tie-ins between physical and digital products is very much on our agenda.”
Serif’s Hewson leaves us with: “We, and in particular retailers, will have to accept that within a few years nearly all consumers will just buy software online. What share of that action the traditional retailers can get through building their own app stores against competitors – such as Microsoft, Apple, Valve, and Amazon – I guess is their challenge.”
An interesting thought. Software players in the IT channel need to consider their digital options. Selling physical media alone just might not be enough any more.

Over the last few weeks ive wanted to move things along and it seems that one of the best designs for dcemu was abondoned a few years ago, what im hopefully going to do is use the redundant DCEmu.com website as our american base, google actually penalise sites who arent using .com for whatever reason.
Now i want to use this design --> http://web.archive.org/web/200802101...t.dcemu.co.uk/
and bring it up to date using all the new methods we use now but making the site look a more professional site
The boxes above the news can have links to each console and rotate randomly as well as having a dedicated accesssorie review box and a dedicated game review box.
We will use vbexternal for news but improve the layout as best as we can and hopefully use the commenting system the VB CMS uses, the site will pull news from our news forums here and best of all the homebrew news that doesnt make it to the front page of dcemu.co.uk.
Now hopefully i can pull it off, time will see

The London Games Festival is now in full swing, bringing an incredible variety of gaming activity to the Capital for just over a month.
With events most days between now and October 28th, planning what to do is a game in itself – but one that just became easier with the official LGF 2012 iOS App, powered by AppyNation.
AppyDay: London Games Festival Celebration – free to download from the App Store now - offers festival goers a one-stop shop to browse events which are taking place during the London Games Festival. Events are organised by week and gives the user information on the event title, date and description as well as the place and time the event is taking place. The app allows new events to be added so the user is always kept up to date with the latest events.
The app also gives the users a free ‘app of the day’ which they can download for free. The app of the day changes every day of the festival so the user always has something new and exciting to discover. The app also features a list of other apps, both paid and free, that are recommended by AppyNation as part of their Games We Like initiative.
“It’s the app that keeps on giving,” says Kirsty Payne, event director, London Games Festival. “This free official guide will not only let users browse the Festival and plan their days – but give them games and apps to enjoy as they travel there.”
The London Games Festival kicked off with the Eurogamer Expo at Earl’s Court, and concludes with the MCM Expo at ExCeL on October 28th, and includes a spectacular free art exhibition at City Hall.

The hardware that went into this Arduino gaming console is just fine. But the coding that produced this game called Twisted SNAKE is beyond compare. [Rodot] has programmed several games for the hardware, which uses an Arduino, 160×168 TFT screen, a 3 axis accelerometer, and two input buttons. If you’re interested, there is a forum thread in which he talks a bit more about the hardware design. But you’re not going to want to pass up either of the two videos embedded after the break.
The first clip shows off a bouncing-ball platforming game. The accelerometer moves the ball back and forth, and the top scrolling level brings more ledges into play. This in itself is a great game. But the Twisted SNAKE game shown off in the second video makes our own ARM-based Snake game look like a 3-year-old programmed it. [Rodot] filled up all of the program memory of the ATmega328 chip to make this happen. There’s a menu system which allows for color themes and difficulty selection. The game play itself lets the snake travel anywhere it wishes with the tail following behind in graceful curves. Wow!

Games and interactive entertainment trade body Ukie has today urged the games industry to give their input in to a consultation that will be an important step to getting European clearance for the UK’s video games production tax relief scheme.
Following an earlier consultation (concluded last month) that gathered input into how the production tax relief process would work for UK games companies, the State Aid Consultation published today (and found here) asks for industry input into a Cultural Test that games will be required to pass before becoming eligible for UK production tax relief. Ukie also met with Tiga during this process to collaborate and agree on a common definition for “games” that would qualify for relief.
The Cultural Test will be points based and will ask questions such as whether the game contains British and European cultural elements and whether it has British or European talent in lead roles of the production and for technical innovation.
Ukie have also announced that they will be giving the industry, including non-Ukie members, multiple ways of helping to shape the questions:Under European law, countries cannot introduce tax incentives that give advantages to them over other member states. But the European Commission accepts that countries should be free to support and protect their own particular culture and so does allow tax incentives that add to the cultural output of a country. This is how existing film and games tax credits are currently allowed and this is why the UK system similarly needs to prove that games are cultural products.
Ukie CEO, Dr Jo Twist said “The need to qualify as a cultural product is necessary if we want to get an efficient UK tax production credit scheme working as quickly as possible – and that is the ultimate goal. These questions and this crucial test are so important to get right, so that we can make the UK the best place to make games and interactive entertainment.”

The Games Rating Authority (GRA), the UK statutory rating arm of the Video Standards Council (VSC), today announced that its website is now live.
The website is particularly aimed at those consumers who want a better understanding of how video games are rated and what content issues affect the rating of a game. The GRA believes that the site will be of special interest to parents and carers who want information about video games in an easily digestible form.
Of particular note is the introduction of Additional Consumer Information (ACI). Using the search facility, a consumer can look for a particular game and see what the game contains and why it got the rating it did.
Designed to supplement the PEGI pictorial descriptors, the ACI is presented in text form and describes, in brief, what the game is about, but more importantly, also details the strength and frequency of a specific ratings issue in an easy to read format. The ACI is limited to games rated PEGI 12 and above and only covers games released since March 2012. The aim of the ACI is to provide consumers with sufficient information in order to make informed purchasing decisions.
The GRA website can be accessed at <gp_link type="http" loc="//www.gamesratingauthority.org">www.gamesratingautho rity.org</gp_link>

GameCity, the world’s best-loved videogame culture festival powered by Nottingham Trent University today announced Capsule Capsule, an experiential interpretation of Adam Saltsman’s latest videogame, Capsule, as part of GameCity7 from October 20-27th. Capsule Capsule will take place on the Old Market Square from Oct 22nd-27th. For more details, go to <gp_link type="http" loc="//www.gamecity.org">www.gamecity.org</gp_link>.
GameCity invites you to Capsule Capsule, an exclusive theatrical presentation of Adam Saltsman’s latest title, tense space exploration adventurer, Capsule, featuring only at GameCity7 on the Old Market Square from 10am-5pm from October 22nd-27th.
The experiential event sees participants undergo special training on Earth before stepping into their spaceship to explore the dark, cold confines of space, battling dwindling oxygen and power levels while searching for answers to a slowly unravelling mystery.
Capsule Capsule is the world’s slowest theme park ride ever...
Capsule creator Adam Saltsman said, “CAPSULE is a PC game about exploration and survival, inspired by Lunar Lander and CAPSULE co-designer Robin Arnott's terrifying audio-only gasmask game Deep Sea, a unique gallery-only game that you really have to play live to ‘get’. For months and months now we've been trying to figure out how to create a live version of CAPSULE, not unlike Deep Sea in some ways, and it is finally happening at GameCity7. We are customizing the game and composing some new sound around the experience, and we are both really excited for this thing to exist.”
GameCity Director Iain Simons said, “Capsule Capsule is the spiritual successor to Fez Dez Rez last year, and it’s part of our commitment to do more than just play new and exciting games you may not have heard of, it’s about experiencing them in entirely unique and surprising ways.”
Saltsman created Capsule as part of the launch of Brandon Boyer’s new site Venus Patrol, which was backed on Kickstarter by nearly 1800 contributors and focuses on the culture of gaming. Other collaborators on Venus Patrol included Keita Takahashi, Pendleton Ward, Vlambeer and Die Gute Fabrik, to name a few.
Capsule Capsule is a theatrical event with sensory deprivation elements taking place in a refrigerated area. Those of a nervous disposition, fear of dark/confined spaces or suffer from astrophobia are recommended to avoid this event.
Capsule Capsule will take place on Nottingham’s Old Market Square as part of GameCity7, which runs from October 20-27th. For more details, go to<gp_link type="http" loc="//www.gamecity.org">www.gamecity.org</gp_link>

Between 2009 and 2011 we developed, prototyped and brought to market the iControlPad; a unique controller which connected to phones to play games.
Now we want to go one better; a programmable, open-source, Bluetooth, super-compact controller with a keyboard that you can use on almost any tech device.
<figure style="font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px currentColor; vertical-align: baseline; display: block; font-size-adjust: inherit; font-stretch: inherit;"> </figure>
The iControlPad2 is not tied to phones or tablets. It is designed to be used with anything from your Raspberry Pi, Dev-board or USB Stick computer, to Robots, hobby projects, PC, Mac, bare PCBs/Motherboards, set-top boxes and anything else with Bluetooth.
If you do use it with your phone, it can attach via a swivel-holder for comfort, and is easily stowed when you take calls - as the battery lasts for 12-14 hours it's a great portable controller.
And it's open source. So if it does not do what you want, you add your own commands/protocols, or download ones made by other users.
<figure style="font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px currentColor; vertical-align: baseline; display: block; font-size-adjust: inherit; font-stretch: inherit;"> </figure>
Key areas in detail:
Emulation: With the iControlPad2 you can enjoy proper computer emulation on your phone or tablet. Imagine Amiga/C64/PC/ZX Spectrum/Atari/Amstrad all with complete Keyboard, Mouse and Joystick emulation on one small controller; not to mention amazing support for almost any console emulator.
Unrivalled control set: A full QWERTY keyboard, digital D-Pad, 2 analogue nubs, 4 face buttons, Start, Select and 2 shoulder buttons. Everything you need in a compact device - it's the same size as an iPhone4.
No need for App support: The iControlPad2 will work with almost any app, whether it supports it or not. Thanks to new overlay software, you can map the iControlPad2 controls and keys to screen presses in iOS or Android. Just map your favorite app and start playing; you will be amazed at the advantage real controls give you. See the video for a demonstration.
Spread the word to as many sites as you can and help get this project going.

Consoles are power-sucking energy hogs leeching the life force from the very planet upon which we make our home, and every generation demands more power than the last. The slim versions of the PS3 and 360 use less power than the heavyweight originals, but just wait until the next generation comes and your 720 needs to be powered by an artificial black hole.
But there's one thing we're getting right, environmentally speaking. Games consoles have never been packaged as creatively and as responsibly as they are today. Boring? Nope. Get ready for some science.
The 360, Wii, and PS3 all ship packaged in layers of cardboard rather than the expanded polystyrene which filled the boxes of consoles from previous generations. Polystyrene was the packing material of choice for most of the eighties and nineties - the SNES was packaged in a colossal slab of the stuff and even NES games had an EPS block in the box to make the package look bigger and sexier on the shelf.
<figure style="margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; border: 0px currentColor; width: 620px; color: rgb(68, 68, 68); text-transform: none; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; clear: both; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: inherit; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; word-spacing: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; float: none; display: block; white-space: normal; position: relative; orphans: 2; widows: 2; font-size-adjust: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px;" class="article-image article-image-alt article-image-620"> <figcaption style="font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 5px 10px; border: 0px currentColor; left: 0px; bottom: 0px; color: rgb(238, 238, 238); vertical-align: baseline; display: block; position: absolute; max-width: 50%; font-size-adjust: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.498039);">Where beige '90s electronics go to die.</figcaption></figure>What most people know as polystyrene is in fact 'expanded polystyrene' - the white, air-filled foam. Regular polystyrene is a dense plastic used in everything from yoghurt pots to jewel cases. It bears a resin ID code of 6; it's a single polymer plastic and can be recycled in a profitable manner. Recycling, remember, is a business and recyling facilities need to turn their collected materials into money if they're to keep recycling and save the entire bloody world.Expanded polystyrene isn't nearly so easy to recycle. It's the same single polymer plastic but is ninety-eight percent air. Recycled plastics are bought and reused, often by Chinese manufacturers. But if you send expanded polystyrene uncompressed you're going to spend a few hundred pounds on fuel for a few pennies back on the weight.
EPS is usually compacted to one fortieth its original size using purpose-built equipment as locally as is possible. It gets transported to a recycling facility, chopped, turned into a liquid glop, and then made into dense pellets that can be shipped in bulk. Brilliant.
[h=3]RECYCLING POINT[/h]Well, brilliant for companies dealing with massive amounts of the stuff, but not so brilliant for consumers. While it's possible to recycle polystyrene at several locations in the UK, no local authority collects EPS in their doorstop collections. So EPS used to package consumer goods usually ends up in a landfill where it'll go about its business of outlasting everyone you'll ever love.

No matter which way you cut it, the Android-based Wikipad gaming tablet -- dubbed as much despite not having any connection to Wikipedia -- is unusually expensive. As a 10.1-inch Android tablet, it's comparably priced with the leaders of the market (of the Apple and Samsung variety). The obvious problem comparatively with the big dogs: visibility. What is Wikipad, anyway? And who made it?
"This is our first product into the market," consummate salesman and Wikipad CEO James Bower told us in an interview earlier this week -- yes, the company's name is shared with its first product. "We've self-funded the whole concept to this point with a couple of us founders. No VC money or anything," he said (the company did, however, just close its first round of venture capital funding for marketing costs, post-development). Bower's company took the idea of an Android-based gaming tablet with a proprietary, physical (and removable) gamepad from concept to reality in the last year, first revealing the tablet at CES 2012. "We've been able to accomplish a lot very efficiently and very effectively to this point," Bower said, in reference to the approximately 80 people who created the device.
That said, despite our positive hands-on time with the Wikipad (even in its prototype state), $500 is a heck of a lot of money to plunk down on an unproven device from an unproven company. The argument gets harder when you remember Sony's PlayStation Vita -- an arguably much nicer device with a far larger library of gaming content that costs half the Wikipad's price at $249.99. Bower doesn't see the logic in this argument. "It's double the price, but it's also double the size," he pointed out. "If you buy a tablet that's seven inches, you can get a $199 tablet -- it's called a Google Nexus or a Kindle Fire. If you're gonna get a full 10-inch tablet, a tablet to this quality, you're gonna spend $499 to $749 ... if we were talking about a 7-inch device or a 5-inch device, and we were at this price point, then it'd be a different story." Admittedly, the tablet -- as a standalone device -- isn't too shabby. But will it woo consumers away from the likes of Apple and Samsung? Bower hopes as much, but we're not so sure.

Beer Pong seems to have been around for some time but it only recently exploded in to a universally known game. But one thing has always bothered us. Who wants to drink the beer into which that grimy little ball has fallen? Leave it to the frat boys at MIT to come up with a solution. Their beer pong table automatically cleans your balls.
Of course the table looks great. It’s outfitted with laser cut felt lettering on the apron, and the top features EL wire highlights. But the two features that really set it apart aren’t hard to spot either. First, there are rain gutters along either side to help catch the spillage. Secondly, that blue ring is actually the input nozzle for the ball cleaner. By pushing the ball through the vinyl sleeve it enters a recirculating liquid cleanser, popping out of the portal on the left a second later. That’s about all the details we have on the system, but you can get a closer look at the inner workings in the clip after the break.
The thing to remember is that these guys NEVER run out of ping-pong balls. They’ve got thousands on hand ever since they built this launcher.

GamesAid last night revealed the final winners of its 2012 charity vote.
Action For Kids, Jigsaw4U, Small Steps, Special Effect and The Willow Foundation were the five charities that got the nod from GamesAid members. To be in the running each charity had to have a turnover of £5m or less and running costs of no more than 30 per cent.
Each received £36,000 in funding. This has been raised by several individuals and companies working across the games industry

Metal Gear Solid creator sees his peers as 'the last generation' of single visionaries
Metal Gear Solid designer and industry icon Hideo Kojima has predicted that there is little future for auteur developers in the games industry.
Speaking at today's Annual Games Lecture 2012 at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, Kojima was asked if he saw himself as an auteur.
"I guess you could say that yes, I could be considered an auteur," offered Kojima, speaking through a translator.
Kojima takes complete control over his titles' gameplay, narrative, control scheme, presentation and just about every element of a Metal Gear Solid Game.
"But that said," he added, "I do think that that particular type of games creation is like indie film making. It is becoming more and more unusual."
