Do you like games so old they look like they're made out of ceefax? Then you might be interested to know that a special event aimed right at you is set to take place next month.
Titled Retro Fusion: A Weekend of Gaming, it's the sequel to last year's Retro Ball, and it's scheduled for September 30th - October 1st. The event will take place at the Kenilworth Wardens Cricket Club Ground, which is somewhere outside London, and tickets are priced £10 for the Saturday, £7.50 for the Sunday or £15 for the whole shebang. Or five guineas, eight shillings and a shiny tuppence-ha'penny, most probably.
So what do you get for your money? Well, apparently the event will be even bigger and better than last year's, with all manner of arcade cabinets, old days consoles and computers the size of cars to play with. Plus, for the really really old, some pinball and pachinko.
Jamma+, UKRetro, Console Passion, Retro Passion and Retro Gamer will all be making an appearance - as will a veritable array of "retro celebrities", including Archer Maclean, Andy Nuttal, The Oliver Brothers, Jon Hare and Oli Frey.
They'll be taking part in a Q&A, probably about how old games are really good and modern days games are really rubbish, and who needs more than four TV channels anyway, and there definitely weren't any types of that sort hanging round playgrounds in the fifties.
The event is sponsored by Taito, the publisher, of course, behind the Taito Legends compilations. There will be a PSP Taito Legends high score competition, with a brand new PSP to be won.
To find out more and to buy tickets, visit RetroFusion.co.uk.

Playing cricket with a joypad is a bit like playing tennis with an egg whisk. Radica has created Plug 'n' Play cricket an excruciatingly addictive plug 'n' play video game that allows you to swing and bowl your way to glory instead of a normal controller you can control the on-screen action with a realistic bat and ball. When it comes to batting, ultra-responsive motion sensors in the base console react to the timing and force of your swing. Simply stand a few feet away from the base unit and 'wallop' the ball. The ball is even more ingenious as you have to use a proper bowling movement (without letting go) to hurl the on-screen ball towards the batsmen. The degree of welly you use determines the speed of the ball, and the length of the throw is determined by a power bar that rises as your on-screen bowler runs up to the crease. But get this: the motion-sensitive ball also features a built-in directional pad and three buttons that determine spin and seam.
Thankfully fielding is automatic as you would want to leap in front of your TV. The Plug 'n' Play cricket is all yours for $ 75.

Hi All,

PS: I'm NOT the author of this homebrew, i've only fixed a little bug, so all credits should go to LiQuiD8d.

The always-refreshing RetroGaming with Racketboy has an article up looking at some of the defining games for the much-maligned Virtual Boy game console. The all-red screenshots are meant to remind you of all the 'good times' that could be had with Nintendo's most resounding failure. From the article:
"If there is one game that I think utilizes the 3D element the best, it would have to be Teleroboxer. This Mech/Punch-Ount hybrid game should be a welcome addition to any Virtual Boy game library. Much like Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, you have different attacks, blocking ability, and the need to discover your opponent's weaknesses and openings in their fighting patterns."

A little update on my GPS/Mapviewer project..
It is slowly shaping up in to something useful...
I did the first "field testing" of the mapviewer's gps option tonite. The link below points to a small video clip, captured with my casio camera. It is a bit shacky, but it is hard to drive and focus the camera at the same time ;-)
http://deniska.dcemu.co.uk/bin/Drivin_with_PSP.wmv
[EDIT] Here is another video - in a daylight.
http://deniska.dcemu.co.uk/bin/driving_with_PSP2.wmv
I changed the cursor for directional arrow for gps mode... I guess to make it really cool I need to turn the map and not the center arrow ;-)
I still need to patch a number of bugs and build some content before a public release. So please be patient ;-)
PS: PM if you are interested in helping to beta-test the viewer and build content for it (POI, custom maps, tutorials, documentation, etc). I need people who actually built and tested gps link, described in the thread below.

You might've seen a bit of news about this - Mattel is releasing a game console for "tweens," which merges both game and card scanning phenomena into one package. Certainly on paper that sounds like something born of a marketing orgy, but I went that extra step and requested images and additional info. Very interestingly, the sytem is CD-based, and boasts a 32 bit architecture. They haven't yet released the actual specs and chip manufacturers, but I'm promised that information once they're ready to reveal it. If you look at the system to the left (click for largeness!), it's got some curious design. It folds, but mostly for storage. You put the CD in the left, and cards are scanned over the red light on thr githhand side. Two joypad ports come standard, but a second controller is extra, indicating that these games will actually feature AI, and not just be player vs player. It's a bit complicated how these games work, but rather interesting as well. The game is loaded via the CD, and during play, players can pause and scan upgrades/attribute changes for their character. Once they achieve victory, they can 'save' this upgraded character to a rewritable Intellicard (more on that in just a bit). The system is said to combine their rewritable card technology with "the fast-paced, button-mashing action of video games."
The first crop of games seems to include fighters, mostly. The console ships with X-Men, a controller (designed for tween-sized hands, but I'm sure we could manage), and 6 game cards, for $70. Additional controler is $20, additional game cards are 6 for $10 in randomized booster packs (aka, holy crap there's our money, as each game has 100 corresponding cards!), and there's also an Intellicard holder and console case available. I'm still a bit unclear about which cards are rewritable, all of them, or some of them? Interesting regardless.
Now let's take a look at a game shot (make click for large experience). Here you'll find an image from the X-Men game, which is quite revealing. Backgrounds and sprites are obviously prerendered, and the image sent to me was very high res (I actually shrank the supplied image by 50%). Not sure if the console itself will boast such a mighty resolution, but check out Wolverine's avatar on the left side. Pretty clean! Not sure what's up with the one on the right though. You can see each pixel in the dithering of the shadows. It looks a lot like early prerendered work on the Saturn, which is pretty intriguing. Aside from X-Men, there will be a game based on Cartoon Network's Ben 10, which I'd presume to be a side scroller, a game for Mattel's own Interstellar Wrestling League, and Marvel Heroes will be released in November, 2006. The console itself is scheduled to launch in October.
So they plan to hit the tween market which has graduated from plug and play systems, but isn't ready for dedicated consoles. I'm not entirely certain that such a demographic really exists, as a number of dedicated console games are aimed directly at the tween market, but that's neither here nor there. Here's the really odd thing though - this is Mattel - you might remember that they created the Intellivision, which sold over 3 million units in the early days of gaming (hey, I finally made good use of this!), which was an impressive number in those days, though the VCS did dominate the market. Nowhere in the press releases or literature are they hyping this fact, or their triumphant return to the games market. That's curious enough on its own, but that they decided to name their card technology Intellicard, and then ignore their own roots, well...it's unusual! They had a peripheral called the Intellivoice, after all. I suppose there could be licensing issues with the current Intellivision Lives company, but it's also possible that nobody at Mattel remembers the time when they were on top of the game industry. There's been very little press for this thing, they might've gotten a fair bit more if they'd leveraged that! At any rate, check out the official HyperScan site for more info. It's not got any content as of yet, but it should have some shortly. I can envision some seriously interesting applications of this, though I doubt its potential will be fully explored, as this is primarily to be a license-driven machine. Great possibility there though. Mattel should be sending me one of these things for review come august, so keep an ear open.

China's Green Apple company recently released the latest addition to its APOD line, the AP3100. The device has a 3.6-inch color LCD, SD card slot, and 1.3MP camera, and supports MP3, WMA, and FLAC, JPG, GIF, BMP, AVI, DivX, and XviD. The AP3100 doubles as a Super Nintendo emulator that allows playback of games gleaned from the Internet!
The 4.72" x 2.56" x 0.67" wonder seems to be packing 512MB of memory, but can be added with 4GB SD cards.
No word on price or availability yet, but it shouldn't be too hard to find at an import shop once it hits the shelves.
