Since lots of people, had difficulties with cygwin, in7ane, has come up with a nice gui PC tool for generating the maps...It's still in development phase (as most of this project :-), so if you find a bug, please report it in this thread...
screenshot:
source and exe (in /bin/debug/):
http://deniska.dcemu.co.uk/bin/gmdl21.zip
it does require Microsoft .net 2 from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/ (~22Mb)
but installation and usage seem to be much easier and straight forward for average user :-)
[EDIT] Here is a link to a newer version, featuring:
- custom map creation
- GPSFS - map compression format...
- POI/directions support
- numerous map vendor support
- hybrid maps and more
http://www.in7ane.com/psp/gmdl.html
Check the thread for details and latest versions...

More excellent MAP This News - From the release of Deniska`s GPS Map Viewer for the PSP, heres his latest newspost:
I have updated the scripts section with a new cygwin script, which gets the maps from MSN maps/ Virtual Earth engine (http://local.live.com)
usage:
./getVEmap.sh [latitude] [longitude] [base zoom] [map size]
example:
./getVEmap.sh 40.619442 -73.970926 1 16
latitude/longitude must be in decimal format
base zoom: 0-16
map size: number of 256x256 pix tiles in 1 row
map size: 16 will create an equivalent of 4096x4096 pixel map at base zoom
==================================================
You'll need to install cygwin (cygwin.com) and Java (JRE) from java.sun.com to run the script.
Both distributions are free and there are plenty of instructions & tutorials on how to set them up.
MSN Maps/ Virtual Earth seem to have a better than Google coverage of some areas, for example: Eastern Europe.
Here is a screenshot of a map for Riga, Latvia, which, according to Google just does not exist :-) :
Go to http://local.live.com to check the coverage for your area..
Once you find your map, you can get the GPS coordinates this way:
1) Center your map on the location you want.
2) Click on "Share" tab and select "View Permalink"
3) You'll get something like: _http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=56.945724~24.145804&style=r&lvl=15&scene=1935198&rtp=null~null - The highlighted number are the coordinates that you'll need for the getVEmap.sh script
Here is the same area mapped my Google and MSN:
Go to http://www.neoflash.com/forum/index.....html#msg20991 for the Downloads for now.

Since people keep asking, here is a short tutorial & example of how to do it:
The map viewer package, that I released for neo flash compo, includes the cygwin script (in the scripts) to get the maps for any given GPS coordinate:
./getmap.sh [latitude] [longitude] [base zoom] [size]
The script takes 4 arguments.
You can find out the latitude/longitude for the area of your interest by using following tool:
http://www.mapki.com/wiki/Get_Lon_Lat
Base zoom [0-16] cooresponds to the values of the zoom bar on that tools map (with 0 being the most detailed map)
Size - is the number of 256pixel segments, your map's side will consist of, i.e size 16 will create you a base map of 4096x4096 pixels
You do need to install cygwin from http://cygwin.com/
There are plenty of tutorials on setting up and using this unix - like environment...
But le't just take a pre-made map (generated with the getmap.sh script) and load it on the browser...
1. Create a folder called /WEB in the root of your PSP's memory stick.
2.Download a small map of center of Paris:
http://deniska.dcemu.co.uk/bin/_PARI....34497_16x.zip (paste the link in to your browser if it does not work directly) and unzip it in to WEB folder, that you just created.
Your WEB folder should have 1x, 2x, 4x... folders in it, as well as 1x.html 2x.html...8x.html files...
3. Open PSP's web browser and type in following URL:
file:/WEB/8x.html
You should see your saved map now..
Click on the map to zoom in or use LEFT TRIGGER to go back & zoom out...Use directional buttons to move up/down/left/right on the map.
This, of course, is not as versatile as the "MapThis!" program, but may still be useful in some cases for 2.7+ FW users...
NOTE: displaying maps, large than 4096x4096 will run PSP's browser out of memory...

While we've seen our fair share of off-the-wall handhelds that do a dab of everything, including aplenty of overseas knockoffs that usually aren't what they claim to be, this little gadget seems to have a bit more credibility than the usual mishmashed portable. The Pocket Pad, reportedly sold through Alpha Plus, is a handheld gaming device with a button layout reminiscent of the original Game Boy, and rocks a 2.4-inch LCD that could potentially induce uncomfortable amounts of squinting while gaming. The 'Pad doubles up on the fun by providing a built-in MP3 player with 1GB of flash storage to accompany the nine internally-housed retro Sega titles, reportedly including Ecco the Dolphin and the obligatory Sonic the Hedgehog. While there's no word on whether this thing plays any other games, it does sport an SD slot in case your music library exceeds the 1GB barrier (or you just want to give your homebrew apps a try). A rather unexpected addition to the feature set is the inclusion of a TV-out jack that should enable you to pipe that button-mashing mayhem onto the big screen while at home. Deets concerning the battery life and included accessories (not to mention a warranty) are unsurprisingly missing, but if you've got money to gamble and a hankering for pocketable Sega action, the Pocket Pad will supposedly drop in October for £80 ($151).

Online gaming hardware heads to the grave, with software-only service in its place
If prizes were awarded for living up to a name to almost disastrous effect, then the rarely-seen Phantom Games Service from Phantom Entertainment would almost certainly be basking in a big, pot of gold right now. As it stands, it's currently contemplating another troublesome episode in the longest-running tragi-comedy since Shakespeare last waved a quilted pen.
According to its official site (formerly Infinium Labs), original plans to release the Phantom service as a PC console unit that would sit sweetly under your telly and download gaming content directly have now been scrapped. In its place will now be an online games service that will "run as client software on personal computers operating Windows XP and Windows XP Media center operating systems".
The sceptics will already be raising their eyebrows over this one. After all, isn't this service vaguely similar to other online gaming services already available on home computers, and not the revolutionary set-up originally proposed?
It will be interesting to see whether the Phantom will ever see the light of day in its new state, and if it does, whether its reported original support from publishers such as Eidos and Codemasters will still be in full force. One thing's for certain though - you can apparently still pre-order its smart, wireless Phantom Lapboard peripheral from the website...

I wasn't gonna post this until I saw the other posts of cell phones. This one has gone unnoticed however and its probably the most important one to any regular DCEmu.CO.UK visitor!
Features:
- GSM/GPRS mobile phone endowed with a bootloader amenable to letting users re-flash the phone with modified Linux-based firmware, via a mini-USB port.
- development kit will include documentation and tools for developers targeting QPE-based Linux mobile phones. The kit will also apparently include source code for key QPE applications, such as the address book and dialer.
- The phone has a fairly thin and small "candybar" form factor, and measures 4.2 x 1.9 x 0.6 inches (106.5 x 49.0 x 15.6mm). It is based on a dual-core Marvell (formerly Intel) XScale processor clocked at 312MHz. It has 64MB of RAM, and 128MB of flash, expandable through a mini-SD card slot.
- The Greenphone has a QVGA (320 x 240) LCD touchscreen display, in addition to hardware buttons to support keypad-driven user interfaces. Trolltech's QPE has supported both touchscreens (popular in technology-driven Asia) and keypad interfaces (popular in convenience-driven markets such as Europe and the U.S.)
- The device also includes WiFi, and comes with SIP middleware supporting VoIP calls.
- 1.3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth radio, and the all-important mini-USB port, over which the firmware can be updated. The Greenphone's baseband processor/modem is a Broadcom BCM2121.
Yeah... I know you want one too!

New from SuccessHK
Product Features of Digital Electronics Sanyo Xacti HD1
HD1 is able to create high-definition videos at 1280 x 720 pixels at 30 frames per second
5.36-megapixel CCD image sensor
Real-time MPEG-4 compression, noise reduction and high-definition processing
Capture Still and Video Images Simultaneously
10x Optical Zoom Lens / 10x Digital Zoom Lens
More Description of Digital Electronics Sanyo Xacti HD1
Key to the Sanyo HD1's ability to record high-definition video is its high-precision LSI (large-scale integration) for image processing. This powerful ''high-definition engine'' executes a vast number of calculations in a short period of time. It enables the HD1 to realize image processing functions such as high-definition 720p processing, real-time MPEG-4 compression and noise reduction.
Displayed prominently in the front of the Sanyo Xacti HD1 is a bright, highly efficient 10x optical zoom lens. Built from 12 elements designed in 9 groups and with a built-in neutral density filter, the 10x zoom lens has a maximum aperture of f/3.5 in both wide and telephoto angles, allowing for clear images in lower light situations. Combined with a 10x digital zoom capability, the Sanyo HD1 is capable of a total 100x zoom.
As with all previous Sanyo Xacti digital media cameras, the HD1 can record still images in addition to video clips. A newly developed 5.36 Megapixel (total) CCD captures beautiful 5.1 Megapixel still images which are recorded directly onto a standard SD memory card. The camera can record both 5.1 Megapixel still images and high-definition (1280 x 720-pixel) digital video at the same time with a simple press of the shutter button during the shooting of a video clip (depending on the mode used to take still images, simultaneous video clip shooting may be interrupted).

New from SuccessHK
Product Features of Digital Electronics Fujifilm FinePix Z3
Super CCD HR sensor delivering 5.1 million effective pixels
RP (Real Photo) Processor II resulting significantly less noise
Intelligent Flash achieves the optimum combination of high sensitivity and natural skin tones
Picture Stabilization setting up ultra-fast shutter speed to minimize the risk of blurry images
Sensitivity range of ISO 64-1600 for low-noise photography in all conditions
More Description of Digital Electronics Fujifilm FinePix Z3
The FinePix Z3 Zoom comes equipped with Real Photo Technology that delivers its most visible benefits when the light goes down. Whilst most conventional digital cameras give messy, blurred results when you try to take photographs in darker conditions, the ISO 1600 sensitivity means that you will be able to get beautiful, atmospheric photography without needing to use the flash. The Z3 Zoom is for people that know that sensitivity is more important to great photographs than the number of pixels.
An ingenious feature on the latest range of Fujifilm's Real Photo Technology cameras is the Natural Light + Flash mode. In situations where you want to compare the effect of flash with the naturally-lit version, this function will take two photographs in quick succession, one with flash and one without. Very often, both will be excellent photographs, and leave you spoilt for choice with which you prefer.
It's surprising enough that the little FinePix Z3 Zoom achieves photographs of such quality. However, the camera also has the ability to shoot movie footage of extraordinary clarity. Rather than the low-resolution, jerky footage that you might associate with movie modes on a digital camera, the Z3 Zoom offers TV-resolution (640 x 480 pixel) movies at a frame rate of 30 frames per second.

Here is yet another, slightly better than previous, video of "MAP THIS!" GPS viewer in action:
Actually, this shows a replay of a GPS data, captured on one of my field trials. This was done in order to get steady shot and good focus. Of course, it looks exacly the same with "life" GPS feed.
The clip shows the difference between "NORTH UP" and "TRACK UP" modes and the use of "zoom" functionality.
